Newly released videos show the moment two Minneapolis police officers were shot while responding to a deadly attack at an apartment building, where a gunman had already killed two people and wounded three others.

The videos, released Wednesday by the city of Minneapolis, provide a clearer view of the September 2 shooting involving officers who were trying to secure the building while residents remained trapped inside. Newly released 911 transcripts also document the panic among victims and residents as they were wounded or hid inside the building seeking help.

Authorities said Carlton Johnson killed two neighbors and wounded five other people, including two police officers, an ex-girlfriend and two employees of the apartment building. Johnson was later fatally shot by police.

In the police footage, officers can be seen moving toward a victim lying in a hallway when Johnson suddenly appeared from behind a corner carrying a handgun. He opened fire, striking Officer Joseph Michnowski.

Michnowski ran away from the gunfire while additional shots could be heard. He then radioed that the shooter was on the ninth floor and that he had been hit. Video showed him raising his left hand, which appeared to be shaking.

Other officers, who had become separated from Michnowski, called out from a stairwell landing to check whether he was safe.

Moments later, Officer Yahye Mahmed Ahmed was seen standing at the stairwell landing and pointing his weapon toward the hallway. More gunshots were heard before yellow smoke suddenly filled the doorway. The officers then moved back down the stairs.

Ahmed could be heard shouting that he had been hit.

The shooting began when Johnson shot and wounded a woman identified by authorities as the mother of his child, Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said. The woman’s child was not injured.

A series of frantic 911 calls began shortly after 4:30 p.m. One wounded woman told a dispatcher that she had been shot in the legs and could not move. She also told the operator that her child was with her.

In another call, a woman who worked in the building said she was hiding inside a storage room after Johnson had reportedly shot two employees. She told the dispatcher that she did not know whether the gunman was still firing and said she would not leave until she knew police had arrived.

After shooting the two employees, Johnson took an elevator to the ninth floor, where he killed two residents before being fatally shot by police.

Investigators said it remained unclear whether Johnson specifically targeted the two residents or encountered them by chance in the hallway.

Johnson had reportedly been the subject of concerns from people living in the building before the shooting. Building owners were attempting to evict him, while residents and law enforcement officials said he had threatened neighbors and warned that he intended to shoot people.

At least one person had sought a restraining order against Johnson. Police also investigated him in June after he was reportedly seen displaying a weapon, but the county attorney’s office ultimately decided not to file charges.

The newly released footage and 911 records provide additional details about the moments of violence and the response by officers and residents inside the building.
