Baby Born on the Side of a San Francisco Road Reunites With the Strangers Who Helped Deliver Her

A San Francisco family has reunited with the people who helped deliver their baby girl after she was born unexpectedly on the side of a road in Golden Gate Park.

The baby’s parents, Nate Geminiano and Karollyn Zepeda, were trying to reach a hospital over the weekend when traffic became heavily congested. But Karollyn’s labor progressed much faster than expected, leaving the couple unable to reach the hospital in time.

The situation quickly became an emergency.

As the couple’s car was stuck in traffic, Katie Higgins, a trained doula who happened to be nearby on her way to her child’s soccer game, stopped to help. Higgins had completed her doula training 13 years ago and was able to assist the mother as the birth began.

Emergency responders were also called to the scene. Paramedics and other first responders arrived while the baby was being delivered outside the hospital.

The unexpected roadside birth took place in an area of Golden Gate Park where traffic can become particularly difficult during busy weekends. Instead of making it to a delivery room, the family welcomed their daughter with the help of strangers and emergency crews on the roadside.

Several days later, the family returned to meet the people who had helped them during those stressful moments.

The reunion brought together the parents, Higgins and the first responders who had assisted with the delivery. The emergency workers were presented with pink stork pins recognizing their role in helping bring the baby safely into the world.

For Higgins, the experience was especially unexpected. She had simply been heading to a soccer game when she encountered a family suddenly needing help.

The reunion also gave the parents an opportunity to personally thank everyone involved. What had begun as a stressful race against time ended with the safe arrival of their daughter and a group of strangers who became part of her first moments of life.

The story has since attracted attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the birth — a baby arriving on the side of a busy San Francisco road, helped into the world by a doula and emergency responders who happened to be nearby.

For the family, those people will always be connected to the day their daughter was born.
