The Bride in the Abandoned Church -PART 1

HE FOUND A BRIDE HIDING INSIDE HIS ABANDONED CHURCH BEFORE DAWN… BUT SHE WAS CARRYING A SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY THE MOST POWERFUL FAMILY IN TOWN
Elias Mercer had spent twelve years trying to forget what people were capable of doing to one another.
At 49, he lived alone on a forgotten piece of land outside a small Montana town, where the roads turned to mud after rain and the nearest neighbor was almost three miles away.
He had once believed in people.
Then his wife died.
Then his younger brother betrayed him.
Then the bank took nearly everything he owned.
By the time Elias walked away from town, he had learned one simple lesson.
Silence was safer than trust.
That was why he rarely spoke to anyone.
He repaired old fences.
Raised horses.
Hunted when he needed meat.
And every Sunday morning, he visited an abandoned wooden church on the edge of his property.
The church had been empty for decades.
But Elias kept it standing.
He didn’t know exactly why.
Perhaps because it was the last place that still reminded him of the man he used to be.
But one freezing morning in October, Elias discovered that he wasn’t alone.
He heard a noise coming from inside the church.
A soft knock.
Then another.
He stopped halfway up the wooden steps.
The sun hadn’t risen yet.
Fog covered the valley.
His hand slowly moved toward the rifle hanging from his shoulder.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
Elias pushed the old door open.
The smell of rain and dust filled the room.
Then he saw her.
A woman was hiding beneath the wooden pews.
She was wearing a wedding dress.
The white fabric was torn at the shoulder, covered in mud and blood.
One hand was pressed tightly against her stomach.
The other was holding a small black metal box.
She looked at Elias with terrified eyes.
“Please…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Don’t let them find me.”
Elias didn’t move.
“Who?”
The woman tried to stand.
She couldn’t.
Her knees collapsed beneath her.
Elias caught her before she hit the floor.
She was freezing.
Not cold.
Freezing.
“Where are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“Don’t call the sheriff.”
“That wasn’t what I asked.”
“They’re looking for me.”
“Who?”
She looked toward the church windows.
Then she whispered four words that made Elias go completely still.
“The Blackwood family.”
Everybody in the county knew that name.
The Blackwoods owned the largest ranching company in three counties.
They owned businesses.
Land.
Banks.
Half the people in town owed them money.
Elias had stayed away from them for years.
Now one of their enemies was bleeding in his church.
He looked at the woman again.
“You’re a Blackwood?”
“No.”
“Then why are they looking for you?”
She tightened her grip around the metal box.
“Because I know what they did.”
Before Elias could ask another question, headlights appeared through the fog.
Two vehicles.
Coming fast.
The woman panicked.
“They found me.”
Elias looked toward the road.
The vehicles stopped near the church.
Three men stepped out.
All wearing dark coats.
One of them carried a shotgun.
Elias turned back toward the woman.
“How bad is your injury?”
“Bad enough that I can’t run.”
“Can you crawl?”
She stared at him.
“What?”
“Can you crawl?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Elias pointed toward the old wooden floor.
“There’s a storage room beneath the altar.”
“There is?”
“Only one entrance.”
“And if they search?”
“They won’t find you.”
She looked at him for several seconds.
“You don’t even know me.”
Elias picked up his rifle.
“No.”
He walked toward the front door.
“But I know what fear looks like.”
The woman grabbed his sleeve.
“What’s your name?”
“Elias.”
“Elias what?”
“Mercer.”
She froze.
“You’re the Mercer?”
Elias frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“My father told me about you.”
“Who was your father?”
She hesitated.
Then she said a name Elias hadn’t heard in nearly twenty years.
“Thomas Vale.”
Elias felt the blood drain from his face.
Thomas Vale had been his best friend.
The only man Elias had ever trusted completely.
He had died in a suspicious ranch accident two decades earlier.
At least, that’s what everyone had believed.
Elias stared at the woman.
“You’re Thomas’s daughter?”
She nodded.
“My name is Clara Vale.”
For the first time that morning, Elias lowered his rifle.
“Thomas had a daughter?”
“He did.”
“Why didn’t I know?”
“Because my mother took me away after he died.”
A loud knock shook the church door.
“Open up!”
Clara grabbed Elias’s arm.
“They killed my father.”
Elias stared at her.
“What did you say?”
“They didn’t kill him in an accident.”
Another knock.
Harder this time.
“They murdered him.”
Elias felt something inside him that he hadn’t felt in years.
Anger.
Not the kind that burns quickly.
The kind that waits.
The kind that survives twenty years.
He looked at the little black box in Clara’s hands.
“What’s inside?”
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
“The reason my father had to die.”
The church door suddenly opened.
Elias turned.
A man stepped inside.
He was tall, broad, and wearing a black cowboy hat.
“Morning, Mercer.”
Elias recognized him.
Caleb Blackwood.
The eldest son of the Blackwood family.
A man who had never been arrested despite half the county knowing what he was capable of.
Caleb smiled.
“We’re looking for a woman.”
Elias leaned against the doorway.
“Lots of women in Montana.”
“She was wearing a wedding dress.”
Elias shrugged.
“Can’t say I’ve seen one.”
Caleb looked around the church.
Then his eyes settled on the blood drops on the floor.
His smile disappeared.
“You sure about that?”
Elias looked down.
One drop.
Then another.
He had forgotten to wipe them away.
Caleb slowly reached for his gun.
“You’re hiding her.”
Elias didn’t answer.
Caleb stepped closer.
“You don’t understand what you’ve gotten yourself into.”
Elias finally looked him directly in the eyes.
“I’ve been told that before.”
“You’re protecting someone who stole something from my family.”
“Maybe your family shouldn’t have lost it.”
Caleb’s jaw tightened.
“You have five minutes.”
“For what?”
“To hand her over.”
“And if I don’t?”
Caleb smiled again.
“Then we’ll search every inch of this property.”
Elias knew what that meant.
They wouldn’t stop at the church.
They would search his house.
His barn.
His horses.
Everything.
And if they found Clara, they wouldn’t take her to the sheriff.
They would make sure she disappeared.
Elias closed the church door.
Then he turned around.
Clara was standing beside the altar.
Her face was pale.
“They’re going to kill you too,” she whispered.
Elias looked at her.
“Probably.”
“Then why are you helping me?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward the altar and lifted an old wooden board.
Beneath it was a narrow staircase.
“Get down there.”
Clara hesitated.
“What about you?”
Elias handed her the rifle.
She stared at it.
“I don’t know how to use this.”
“You don’t need to.”
“What are you going to do?”
Elias looked toward the church door.
“Give them what they’re expecting.”
“What?”
“A reason to leave.”
Clara disappeared beneath the floor.
Elias replaced the board.
Seconds later, the church doors opened again.
Caleb and his men walked inside.
They searched the pews.
The walls.
The old confession room.
Nothing.
Then Caleb noticed something.
Elias was smiling.
“You think this is funny?”
“No.”
“Then why are you smiling?”
Elias looked him straight in the eye.
“Because you came looking for the wrong woman.”
Caleb stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
Elias pointed toward the back window.
“You should ask yourself why she ran here.”
Caleb turned.
For one second, confusion crossed his face.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed instantly.
“What?”
He listened.
Then slowly looked back at Elias.
“She’s not alone.”
Elias said nothing.
Caleb ended the call.
“Who else knows?”
Elias didn’t understand the question.
“Knows what?”
Caleb walked toward him.
“My father is going to be very interested in this.”
Elias’s blood ran cold.
“Why?”
Caleb smiled.
“Because Thomas Vale wasn’t the only man he had buried twenty years ago.”
Then he walked out.
Elias waited until the vehicles disappeared into the fog.
Only then did he lift the wooden board.
“Clara.”
No answer.
He climbed down.
She was sitting against the wall, crying silently.
But she wasn’t crying because of Caleb.
She was staring at the black metal box.
Elias knelt beside her.
“What is it?”
Clara slowly opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
A handwritten ledger.
And one yellowed newspaper clipping.
Elias picked up the photograph.
His hands began to shake.
It showed Thomas Vale standing beside three men.
One was Elias.
One was Caleb’s father.
And the third man…
was Elias’s own younger brother.
Elias stared at the photograph in disbelief.
His brother had supposedly been thousands of miles away that year.
He had always believed that.
Then Clara spoke.
“My father discovered what they were doing.”
Elias looked at her.
“What were they doing?”
She swallowed.
“They weren’t stealing land.”
“They were making people disappear.”
Elias felt the room spin.
Clara opened the ledger.
Hundreds of names were written inside.
Some had dates.
Some had dollar amounts.
And beside several names was one word.
DEAD.
Then Elias saw a name that made his heart stop.
His wife’s name.
He looked at Clara.
“What does this mean?”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“I think your wife was one of them.”
Elias couldn’t breathe.
For twelve years, he had believed his wife died in a robbery gone wrong.
But now, for the first time, he wondered whether her death had never been an accident.
And if the ledger was real…
the woman hiding beneath his church floor hadn’t come to him by chance.
She had come because Elias was the only man left who could expose the truth.
And somewhere outside, Caleb Blackwood was already making a phone call.
A call to the one person Elias thought had been dead for twenty years.
His brother.
