Ex-Paramedic Accused of Poisoning Wife With Eye Drops and Staging His Own Kidnapping

A former paramedic in North Carolina is facing serious criminal allegations in a case involving the death of his wife, an alleged insurance scheme, and a reported attempt to stage his own kidnapping.

Joshua Hunsucker is accused of using eye drops containing tetrahydrozoline to poison his wife, Stacy Robinson Hunsucker, who died in September 2018. Prosecutors allege that he gave her the substance over time and misrepresented the cause of her death to obtain a $250,000 life insurance payout.

According to investigators, Stacy’s death was initially described as a heart attack. Her body was cremated within two days, but questions later arose about the circumstances surrounding her death. Prosecutors say a blood sample collected at the hospital because Stacy was an organ donor became important evidence in the investigation.

Hunsucker was arrested in December 2019 and charged in connection with his wife’s death. He has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges reported by Fox News.

The case took another turn in 2023, when authorities accused Hunsucker of staging his own kidnapping while he was awaiting trial on bond. Investigators alleged that he used zip ties and claimed his in-laws had abducted him and injected him with an unknown substance. He was also accused of harassing and intimidating his late wife’s parents.

In a separate allegation, prosecutors said Hunsucker attempted to poison his daughter, who was 10 at the time, using the same method. The allegations led prosecutors to seek the revocation of his bond, which a judge granted.

Hunsucker has also asked for his trial to be moved out of Gaston County, citing extensive media coverage. According to Fox News’ report published April 8, 2026, a trial date for the murder case was still being finalized.

The accusations remain allegations unless and until proven in court.
