Cal State Fullerton Freshman Dies After Fraternity Gathering as Family Seeks Answers

The sudden death of an 18-year-old Cal State Fullerton student after an off-campus fraternity gathering has left his family grieving and seeking answers about what happened during the hours before he was taken to a hospital.

Anthony Joseph Blas, a freshman from Whittier, was brought to the emergency department at St. Jude Medical Center at approximately 12:07 a.m. on September 13, 2026. He was unresponsive when he arrived, and despite lifesaving efforts, medical staff pronounced him dead.

Fullerton police detectives launched a death investigation and determined that Blas had attended a gathering at an unaffiliated fraternity in the area of Associated Road and Milton Avenue, near the Cal State Fullerton campus. Authorities said alcohol consumption appeared to have been a contributing factor based on the preliminary investigation. The official cause and manner of death remain pending with the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner.

Police have also stated that, at this stage, there is no evidence of foul play, and hazing is not considered a factor in the preliminary investigation. The investigation remains active, and authorities have asked anyone with information to come forward.

Blas’ family, however, has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his final hours. According to his family, Anthony had been pledging a fraternity and learned on the morning of September 12 that he had been accepted. They said he was subsequently invited back to the house that evening to celebrate.

The family has questioned why 911 was apparently not called when Anthony became unresponsive and wants investigators to establish who was present, when those individuals realized he was in distress and what happened before he was ultimately taken to the hospital. The family has called for a complete and transparent investigation while emphasizing that they are seeking facts rather than assigning responsibility themselves.

The family has identified the location as being associated with Delta Chi, but the national fraternity has said it does not currently operate a chapter in Fullerton. ABC7 reported that the university revoked recognition of its CSUF chapter in 2021, and the organization said any group currently claiming to operate as Delta Chi there is not authorized or supported by the fraternity.

Cal State Fullerton has confirmed that a student died following an incident at an off-campus residence and said the university is providing counseling and other support to students and members of the campus community affected by the loss.

For Anthony’s family, the tragedy has brought both profound grief and unanswered questions. They are asking authorities to determine exactly what happened that night and whether anyone could have intervened before the teenager was taken to the hospital.

The investigation remains ongoing. Until the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner completes its work, the official cause and manner of Anthony Blas’ death have not been determined. Police have not announced any criminal charges in connection with his death.
