2-Year-Old Peter Mulcaire Killed in Tragic Rathkeale Hit-and-Run as Community Mourns “Ray of Sunshine”

A quiet afternoon in Rathkeale, County Limerick, ended in tragedy when 2-year-old Peter Mulcaire was struck by a jeep near his home, leaving his family and the local community devastated.

The fatal collision happened shortly after 3:50 p.m. on September 5, 2026, in the Abbey Court area of Rathkeale. Peter was reportedly playing on a small toy tractor near his home when he was struck by the vehicle. The jeep did not remain at the scene.

A family member rushed the seriously injured child to University Hospital Limerick, where Peter was later pronounced dead. Gardaí confirmed that a post-mortem examination would be carried out as part of the investigation.

A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Gardaí brought him to a station in County Limerick to provide an evidential blood or urine sample. He was then released pending analysis of the sample. The arrest does not by itself establish that he committed an offence, and Gardaí have not announced a formal charge in connection with the collision.

Investigators carried out a forensic examination of the scene and appealed for witnesses and road users who may have relevant footage. Gardaí specifically asked anyone who travelled through the Abbey Court area between approximately 3:20 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. that afternoon to provide dashcam or other camera footage. A Family Liaison Officer was also appointed to support Peter’s family.

The tragedy sent shockwaves through Rathkeale. Prayers were offered for Peter at Masses across the Diocese of Limerick, while a community family fun day scheduled for the following day was cancelled as a mark of respect.

Peter’s family later announced funeral arrangements, describing him as their “beautiful little boy” and “little angel.” His wake was held in Limerick before his funeral Mass at St Mary’s Church in Rathkeale.

Peter had only recently begun preschool, making the loss even more heartbreaking for those who knew him. At his September 9 funeral Mass, Father Eamonn Fitzgibbon said Peter had entered preschool only days earlier, describing the new experience as an “adventure.”

The priest also remembered Peter as his family’s “sunshine” and “pride,” saying his smile could brighten a room. He recalled Peter as a playful child who loved animals, including the family’s dogs and ponies, and who had quickly become part of his new classroom community.

As Peter was laid to rest, mourners gathered to remember a little boy whose life had only just begun. His death remains the subject of an ongoing Garda investigation, while his family and the Rathkeale community continue to grieve an unimaginable loss.
