Grandmother Trapped in Burning Home Rescued Through Bedroom Window After 11-Year-Old Granddaughter Calls 911
TENNESSEE — A grandmother who feared she would die inside her burning home has survived after her 11-year-old granddaughter called 911 and two police officers rushed to rescue her through a bedroom window.
Paula Bamford, from Clarksville, Tennessee, described the terrifying experience in an interview published on October 15, 2026, recalling how quickly her home filled with thick black smoke.
A Grandmother Wakes Up Surrounded by Smoke
Bamford said she woke to find herself surrounded by heavy smoke, with little time to understand what was happening.
Her immediate concern was the safety of her 11-year-old granddaughter, Macy Ray.
Fortunately, Macy had already managed to escape the burning property. The young girl grabbed her grandmother’s phone and called 911, alerting emergency responders to the unfolding disaster.
Meanwhile, Bamford remained trapped inside.

Police Officers Race Against Time
Unable to escape through the house, Bamford retreated to her bedroom and desperately attempted to break a window.
Clarksville police officers Christopher Bush and Hunter Mead arrived and discovered her struggling at the bedroom window.
The officers broke through the glass and worked together to pull her outside as the flames continued spreading.
Bamford later recalled believing she would not survive. With almost no time remaining, she jumped toward the officers, who managed to pull her through the opening.
Grandmother Survives With Burns and Smoke Injuries
Although Bamford escaped alive, she suffered burns to her face, fingers and arms, along with injuries associated with smoke inhalation.
She subsequently reported that her condition was improving and that her injuries were healing.
The two officers are now receiving recognition from their department for their actions during the rescue.
For Bamford, their arrival came at the moment she needed help most.
Family Loses Home but Escapes Alive
The fire destroyed the family’s home, leaving them without many essential belongings.
Bamford’s daughter established an online fundraiser to help replace clothing, shoes and other necessities.
Despite the devastating property loss, Bamford expressed gratitude that her loved ones had survived.
The family’s experience highlights the importance of emergency preparedness, quick action and the extraordinary difference that a child’s 911 call can make during a life-threatening situation.
