HIS EX-WIFE MARRIED A BILLIONAIRE Part 1: The Woman He Threw Away

HIS EX-WIFE MARRIED A BILLIONAIRE

Chapter 1: The Woman He Threw Away

The moment Adrian Blackwood saw his ex-wife step out of a billionaire’s limousine, he forgot how to breathe.

Emily Carter.

The woman he had divorced three years ago.

The woman he had accused of being incapable of giving him an heir.

And the woman he had once promised to love forever.

Now she stood beneath the glittering lights of the Blackwood Foundation’s annual charity gala, wearing an elegant silver gown that shimmered with every movement. Her dark hair fell softly over her shoulders, and a diamond necklace rested against her collarbone.

She looked beautiful.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

But what made Adrian’s blood run cold was the man standing beside her.

Victor Harrington, the billionaire who had spent the last five years trying to destroy Adrian’s business empire.

Victor offered Emily his arm, and she accepted it with a smile.

Then he leaned down and kissed her forehead.

The gesture was gentle, intimate, and unmistakably possessive.

“Who is that woman?” someone whispered nearby.

Another guest gasped.

“Wait… isn’t that Adrian Blackwood’s ex-wife?”

Adrian tightened his grip around his champagne glass.

Three years ago, Emily had stood in his penthouse living room with tears streaming down her face, begging him to believe that she had done nothing wrong.

But Adrian had already made his decision.

His mistress, Vanessa Reed, had shown him medical documents supposedly proving that Emily could never have children. Vanessa had told him that Emily had hidden the truth before their marriage, trapping him in a relationship that could never produce an heir.

And Adrian, blinded by his desire for a perfect family and poisoned by Vanessa’s lies, had believed every word.

He had thrown Emily out of his life with nothing but a divorce settlement.

He remembered her final words.

“One day, Adrian, you will discover what you lost. But when that day comes, don’t expect me to be waiting for you.”

Back then, he had thought she was simply trying to frighten him.

Now, watching her walk into the ballroom beside his greatest enemy, he wondered whether she had been making a promise.

“Adrian?”

Vanessa appeared beside him in a crimson evening gown. She slipped her hand through his arm, following his gaze.

The moment she recognized Emily, the smile vanished from her face.

“What is she doing here?” Vanessa whispered.

Adrian turned toward her sharply.

“You know she’s coming?”

“Of course not!” Vanessa replied too quickly. “Why would that woman come back after everything she did to you?”

“Everything she did to me?” Adrian repeated coldly.

For the first time in three years, he heard the accusation in those words and wondered whether he had ever truly known the woman he had married.

Across the ballroom, Emily spotted him.

Their eyes met.

For one brief second, Adrian saw something familiar in her expression—the same sadness he remembered from the night of their divorce.

Then it disappeared.

Emily smiled politely, as if he were nothing more than an old acquaintance.

That hurt more than he expected.

Victor guided her toward the center of the ballroom, where the host was preparing to announce the evening’s most important guests.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the host declared, “tonight we are honored to welcome Mr. Victor Harrington and his beautiful fiancée, Miss Emily Carter.”

A wave of applause swept through the room.

Adrian’s champagne glass slipped slightly in his hand.

Fiancée?

Victor raised Emily’s hand and kissed her knuckles.

“We have some wonderful news to share,” he announced. “Emily and I will be married next month.”

The ballroom erupted in applause.

Vanessa’s fingers dug into Adrian’s arm.

“This is humiliating,” she hissed. “She’s clearly doing this to make you jealous.”

Adrian barely heard her.

He was staring at the ring on Emily’s finger—a magnificent diamond that could have purchased an entire apartment building.

Three years ago, she had worn a simple wedding band that he had chosen himself.

She had cried when he placed it on her finger.

Now she wore another man’s promise without the slightest hesitation.

And Adrian suddenly realized that he hated the sight of it.

Not because he still loved her.

At least, that was what he told himself.

But because Emily had once belonged to him, and he had never imagined she could become someone else’s greatest treasure.

When the applause faded, Emily took the microphone.

“Thank you all for your kindness,” she said. Her voice was calm and confident. “Three years ago, I lost almost everything I believed in. I thought my life had ended when someone I loved decided I was no longer worthy of standing beside him.”

Her eyes moved briefly toward Adrian.

“I was wrong. Sometimes, losing the wrong person is the beginning of finding yourself.”

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Adrian felt the words like a slap.

Emily continued.

“Victor gave me something I thought I would never have again—a reason to trust someone. And soon, our family will begin a new chapter.”

Victor smiled at her, but there was something in his expression that Adrian couldn’t quite understand.

Something secretive.

Something almost protective.

Then Emily placed a hand over her stomach.

It was a small gesture.

Almost unnoticeable.

But Adrian saw it.

And so did Vanessa.

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

“No,” she whispered.

Adrian turned toward her. “What?”

Vanessa shook her head, forcing a smile as the people around them began applauding again.

“Nothing. I’m just surprised.”

But her hand was trembling.

Before Adrian could question her further, Victor stepped forward and raised his glass.

“To new beginnings,” he declared.

Everyone drank.

Everyone except Adrian.

He couldn’t stop staring at Emily’s hand resting over her stomach.

Three years ago, Vanessa had convinced him that Emily could never give him a child.

Yet now, his ex-wife stood beside a billionaire, wearing an engagement ring and carrying herself like a woman who had finally escaped a terrible mistake.

A terrible mistake named Adrian Blackwood.

And for the first time, he wondered whether the mistake had been hers—or his.

Twenty minutes later, Adrian found Emily alone on the terrace.

The city stretched beneath them in a sea of golden lights. A cool breeze stirred the loose strands of her hair as she stood beside the glass railing, holding a glass of sparkling water.

“Emily.”

She didn’t turn immediately.

When she finally faced him, her expression was perfectly composed.

“Adrian. Congratulations on the successful gala.”

He stared at her.

“Is it true?”

“Is what true?”

“You’re marrying Victor Harrington?”

Emily glanced at the diamond on her finger.

“Yes.”

“Why him?”

A faint smile touched her lips.

“Because he asked me.”

“Don’t play games with me.”

“I’m not.” She tilted her head. “You divorced me three years ago, Adrian. You don’t get to question my choices anymore.”

He stepped closer.

“Was this your plan all along? Find a rich man, marry him, and come back here to show me what I’ve lost?”

For the first time, Emily’s composure cracked.

She laughed softly, but there was no happiness in it.

“You really haven’t changed.”

“Answer me.”

“I don’t owe you an answer.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Then tell me one thing. Did you ever love me?”

Emily stared at him for a long moment.

“I loved you enough to believe you when you promised that we would face every hardship together. I loved you enough to forgive your mistakes. And I loved you enough to stay even when your family made it clear that I wasn’t good enough for them.”

Her voice trembled slightly.

“But when you thought I couldn’t give you a child, you didn’t even fight for our marriage. You didn’t take me to another doctor. You didn’t ask me to explain. You simply decided I was worthless.”

Adrian looked away.

“I was told the truth.”

“No.” Emily’s eyes hardened. “You were told a lie. There is a difference.”

Before he could respond, the terrace doors opened.

Victor appeared, his expression unreadable.

“Everything all right here?”

Emily immediately stepped beside him.

“Perfectly fine.”

Victor looked at Adrian.

“Mr. Blackwood, I hope you understand that Emily’s past is no longer your concern.”

Adrian forced a smile.

“I’m simply catching up with an old friend.”

“Then allow me to save you the trouble.” Victor placed an arm around Emily’s waist. “My fiancée and I have a wedding to prepare for.”

He began leading her away.

But Emily stopped.

She turned back toward Adrian, and for one brief moment, the woman he remembered seemed to return.

“Adrian,” she said quietly, “there’s something you should know.”

He waited.

Emily took a slow breath.

“The reason I disappeared after our divorce wasn’t because I was ashamed of what happened.”

Her eyes glistened, but she refused to cry.

“It was because I needed to protect someone.”

Adrian frowned.

“Protect who?”

Emily looked down at her hand resting over her stomach.

Then she met his gaze.

“Someone you never knew existed.”

Adrian felt the world shift beneath his feet.

Before he could ask another question, Victor led Emily through the doors, leaving him alone on the terrace.

Behind him, the music continued.

Inside the ballroom, hundreds of guests celebrated the engagement of two people whose union could change the balance of power between the country’s wealthiest families.

But Adrian heard none of it.

One thought consumed him.

What had Emily been hiding?

And why had Vanessa looked so terrified when Emily touched her stomach?

For the first time in three years, Adrian Blackwood understood that his divorce might have been the greatest mistake of his life.

He just didn’t know yet how much it would cost him.
