Inside the Freezing Maine Home Where a 13-Month-Old Girl Died — Her Father Now Faces Manslaughter Charges

The death of a 13-month-old girl inside a freezing Maine home has led to a criminal case against her father, nearly 10 months after the tragedy. The child’s death was initially classified as accidental, but a subsequent investigation resulted in manslaughter and child-endangerment charges.
Eleanora Ray McLaughlin was found unresponsive at her family’s home in Milford on December 28, 2025. An autopsy later determined that she died from hypothermia. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner initially classified the manner of death as accidental.
Her father, Shane McLaughlin, 37, was arrested on October 28, 2026, following an investigation by Maine State Police. He was indicted on one count of manslaughter and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
The circumstances inside the home have raised serious questions. In an interview with NEWS CENTER Maine shortly after his daughter’s death, McLaughlin described using an electric space heater in the bedroom where he and the children were sleeping.
He said a pet had opened the bedroom door during the night, allowing cold air into the room. McLaughlin recalled being able to see his own breath. He later described discovering Eleanora unresponsive when he went to wake her the following morning.
At the time, Eleanora was living with her twin sister and an older brother at her father’s home. Her mother, Erika Dupuis, had moved to West Virginia during the summer of 2025.
The family’s living conditions also attracted scrutiny from state lawmakers. State Senator Jeff Timberlake said documents he had obtained raised concerns about the home, including reports of unsanitary conditions and a lack of running water. He questioned why child welfare officials had not intervened more forcefully before the toddler’s death.
Dupuis previously expressed anger that criminal charges had not been filed sooner. However, in a statement following McLaughlin’s arrest, she also urged people not to judge him harshly, describing the death as a terrible tragedy for the family.
McLaughlin appeared in court on October 30 and pleaded not guilty to all four charges. He is being held at Penobscot County Jail on $250,000 bail, with a further bail hearing requested by his defense attorney.

The case has raised questions about the conditions in which the children were living and whether earlier intervention could have prevented the tragedy. Those issues remain under scrutiny as the criminal proceedings move forward.
Although the medical examiner initially classified Eleanora’s death as accidental, her father now faces serious criminal allegations. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
