Mother Charged After 10-Year-Old Son Fatally Shoots 16-Year-Old Neighbor in Dispute Over Loud Music

A neighborhood argument over loud music ended in tragedy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a 16-year-old girl was fatally shot by a 10-year-old boy during a confrontation involving their families.
Police identified the victim as Keinerlein Rangel. Her death occurred on October 31, 2026, after a dispute between her mother and a neighboring woman, 40-year-old Elaina Gomez-Villeda, escalated into a physical altercation.
According to a criminal complaint, Gomez-Villeda had initially knocked on the neighbors’ door to complain about the volume of their music. The disagreement appeared to end, but the confrontation resumed a short time later when Rangel and her mother went outside to install a security camera.
Investigators allege that another argument broke out and became physical. Rangel reportedly intervened as the adults fought. During the confrontation, Gomez-Villeda allegedly instructed her 10-year-old son to go inside their apartment and retrieve her handgun.
The boy returned with the firearm and fired one shot, striking Rangel. The teenager died from her injuries.
After the shooting, Gomez-Villeda allegedly took her son back inside the apartment. According to investigators, she later texted her husband that she thought she was going to jail before calling 911.
The situation remained tense when Rangel’s father allegedly attempted to force his way into Gomez-Villeda’s apartment. Authorities said Gomez-Villeda fired a shot toward him. When officers arrived, one officer also fired at her but missed. She was subsequently taken into custody.
Gomez-Villeda faces an open count of murder and several additional charges, including child abuse, conspiracy, battery, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and receiving stolen property related to a firearm. She was being held in custody as prosecutors sought to keep her detained while the case proceeds.
Investigators also reported finding other firearms inside her apartment that were not properly secured. The gun used in the shooting was reportedly listed as stolen.
The 10-year-old boy has not been charged. Albuquerque police said detectives are consulting with prosecutors and state officials to determine what, if any, legal action is appropriate given his age. Authorities have not publicly released his identity.

The case remains under investigation. Gomez-Villeda is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
