New Jersey Mayor Charges at Resident During Heated Town Hall Meeting, Video Shows

A New Jersey town hall meeting descended into chaos after Mayor Matthew Bianchini rushed toward a resident and had to be restrained by people inside the room. The confrontation, captured on video, has sparked calls for accountability and renewed attention to tensions between the mayor and one of his outspoken critics.

The incident occurred on October 21, 2026, during a Pemberton Township Council meeting in New Jersey. Bianchini was seated behind the council dais when an exchange involving resident Michael Sawka escalated. Video shows the mayor suddenly getting up and charging toward Sawka before others intervened to hold him back.

As he was escorted from the room, Bianchini could be heard shouting threats at the resident, including, “I’m getting you.”

The mayor later acknowledged that he had lost his temper. In an interview with Philadelphia’s 6ABC, he said he “basically snapped” and admitted that some of his words were wrong. However, he also argued that the confrontation followed alleged disrespectful comments directed at his wife and daughter, who were attending the meeting.

Bianchini and members of his family said Sawka and another resident had made rude remarks toward them. Video from the meeting also appears to show Sawka making an obscene gesture toward the mayor shortly before Bianchini charged at him.

Sawka disputed the mayor’s account, saying he had remained seated and denied making comments about Bianchini’s family. He has described himself as a resident who questions township spending and government decisions.

Following the incident, Sawka filed a municipal court complaint seeking assault and terroristic-threat charges against Bianchini. As of the latest reports, police had not announced whether charges would be pursued. The filing of a complaint does not mean that the mayor has been charged or found guilty.

The confrontation has also drawn attention because Bianchini is seeking to retain his position in the upcoming mayoral election. The dispute highlights the increasingly tense relationship between local officials and residents who challenge their decisions.

For now, the video provides a clear record of the mayor charging toward the resident and being restrained, while the events that led to the confrontation remain disputed. Any criminal allegations will depend on the authorities’ review and the available evidence.
