Oregon School Shooting Victims Remembered as Families Face an Unimaginable Loss

The victims of the deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, are being remembered as families and the local community continue to grieve after a gunman opened fire inside a special education classroom.

The October 15, 2026, attack killed three boys, ages 5, 8 and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. Police have publicly identified the youngest child as Rhoam Summer. The families of the other two boys have asked authorities to keep their names private.

Lambert was working in what her family described as her dream job. Loved ones remembered her as compassionate and dedicated to helping children with special needs. She had grown up in Bend, played volleyball and later coached young athletes, including children whose families could not afford to participate.

Rhoam’s family described the kindergartener as bright, playful and full of personality. He loved dancing, storytelling, sharks and dinosaurs. His family asked people who wanted to honor his memory to draw the creatures he loved.

Two other people survived the attack but were seriously injured: 7-year-old student Saylor Graham-Poarch and 54-year-old teacher Becky Drury. Saylor was initially critically injured, while Drury sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

In a development reported on October 26, Saylor had moved out of intensive care and was showing signs of stabilization, although her family said she faces a long recovery. Fundraising efforts had raised nearly $1.1 million to help with medical and related expenses, according to the New York Post.

Police identified the suspected shooter as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a former Silver Rail student. Authorities said a teacher tried to tackle him and take away his weapon before a community member entered the classroom and fatally shot him, bringing the attack to an end. The motive remains under investigation.

As the community mourns the victims, their families’ memories have offered a glimpse of the lives behind the headlines: a teacher devoted to her students, a young child full of curiosity, and other children whose families are grieving privately. The school district and investigators continue to support those affected as the recovery and investigation move forward.
