Seattle Police Officers and Carjacking Suspect Swarmed by Wasps During Dramatic Arrest Caught on Bodycam

A police chase in Seattle took an unexpected and painful turn when officers attempting to arrest a suspected carjacker found themselves under attack by a swarm of wasps. The bizarre encounter was captured on body-worn camera footage, showing officers and the suspect struggling with the insects while trying to complete the arrest.

The incident occurred on August 13, 2023, in the East Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. According to the Seattle Police Department, officers had responded to multiple 911 calls about a man allegedly attempting to carjack several vehicles while armed with a knife.

The bodycam footage, released publicly in September, showed how a routine pursuit quickly became a chaotic struggle in a wooded area.

Suspect Allegedly Tried to Steal Multiple Vehicles

Police said witnesses reported that the man had been blocking traffic and attempting to stop vehicles before trying to take them. Authorities also said several vehicles sustained significant damage as drivers attempted to get away.

Officers eventually located the 22-year-old suspect in a tunnel on Dexter Way North, beneath Aurora Avenue North. When officers approached, he ran from them, leading the pursuit into a nearby greenbelt.

The officers caught up with the suspect in the brush and attempted to take him into custody. But as they brought him to the ground, they disturbed a swarm of wasps.

Bodycam Captures the Unexpected Attack

The footage captured officers reacting as the insects swarmed around them. One officer could be heard exclaiming, “Yellowjackets everywhere, dude,” while others shouted that they were being stung.

The wasps appeared to crawl over officers’ uniforms and exposed skin as they struggled to secure the suspect and get everyone out of the area.

Despite the painful interruption, officers managed to bring the man out of the wooded area and back toward the street. Video showed them offering him a bottle of water while emergency assistance was available nearby.

The incident also left one officer with a laceration sustained during the arrest.

Both Officers and Suspect Taken to Hospital

Police confirmed that the suspect and the injured officer were transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. The suspect was subsequently booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault, property destruction and attempted robbery.

Authorities did not report that the wasp attack had prevented the arrest. Instead, officers completed the operation despite being stung several times.

The unusual footage drew attention online because of the unexpected role the insects played in an already tense police encounter. What began as a pursuit involving allegations of attempted carjacking ended with both law enforcement and the suspect needing medical attention.

The incident serves as a reminder that police operations can involve unpredictable hazards, even when officers have located and restrained a suspect.
