Senior South African Police Officer Charged With Rape and Human Trafficking

A senior South African police officer has been charged with rape, sexual grooming of a minor and human trafficking, following his arrest earlier this week.

Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya, 59, appeared before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He is South Africa’s suspended deputy national police commissioner and one of the country’s highest-ranking police officers.

Allegations Involve Two Women
According to prosecutors, Sibiya is accused of sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl between July and August 2026.

He is also accused of raping an 18-year-old woman at a hotel in Sandton in May. A separate human trafficking charge relates to allegations involving three people.

The allegations remain unproven in court. Sibiya did not comment during his court appearance.

Bail Hearing Set for September 29
The court postponed the case until September 29 for a formal bail application.

Prosecutors are expected to oppose bail. The state has also raised concerns about the possibility of Sibiya attempting to escape or influencing witnesses, according to South African media reports.

For the time being, Sibiya will remain in custody at the Kgosi Mampuru II correctional facility in Pretoria.

Arrest Comes Amid Police Inquiry
Sibiya’s arrest comes as South Africa’s police service faces scrutiny from the Madlanga Commission, a public inquiry examining allegations of corruption and links between police officials and criminal networks.

Sibiya has previously appeared before the inquiry and has denied allegations of improper relationships with individuals accused of criminal activity. Those allegations are separate from the sexual offence charges now before the court.

The case is expected to return to court next week, when prosecutors will argue against Sibiya’s release on bail.
