The Girl Who Saved Every Apple Seed – Part 1 — The Girl Who Never Threw Anything Away

The Girl Who Saved Every Apple Seed
Chapter One — The Girl Who Never Threw Anything Away
In the small mountain village of Bellweather, autumn always arrived with the smell of apples.
The orchards belonged mostly to wealthy families. Their trees stood in neat rows behind stone walls, heavy with red and golden fruit. When harvest came, carts rolled through the village carrying more apples than most poor families could eat in a year.
But there was one girl who watched the harvest differently.
Her name was Clara Whitmore, the seventeen-year-old daughter of a widowed seamstress.
While other children chased fallen apples through the grass, Clara searched beneath the trees for something much smaller.
Seeds.
Every evening, she sat beside the kitchen hearth with a little wooden bowl on her lap. She carefully cut open the apples her family had been given, removed the seeds, washed them, and laid them on a piece of cloth to dry.
Her younger brother, Thomas, often laughed at her.
“You’re saving those again?”
Clara smiled.

“Of course.”
“They’re only seeds.”
“That is exactly why nobody values them.”
Thomas shook his head.
One afternoon, several village boys saw Clara carrying another handful of apple seeds home.
“Look!” one shouted. “Clara is collecting rubbish again!”
The boys laughed.
Even Mr. Harlan, the owner of the largest orchard, noticed her strange habit.
“Girl,” he called, “if you want apples, pick apples. Don’t waste your time collecting what people throw away.”
Clara lowered her eyes but said nothing.
That evening, her mother found her arranging dozens of seeds in little paper packets.
“What are you going to do with all of them?”
“I don’t know yet,” Clara admitted.
Her mother smiled.
“Then why keep them?”
Clara looked toward the dark hills beyond their cottage.
“Because one day, we might need them.”
Her mother wanted to laugh.
Instead, she kissed her daughter’s forehead.
Clara did not know it yet, but that small collection of seeds would become the beginning of something that would change the entire valley.
