Young Pilot, 20, Among Nine Killed in Florida Jet Crash as Her Final Moments Emerge

Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, a 20-year-old co-pilot whose passion for aviation began when she was a child, was among nine people killed when a private jet crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, on November 1, 2026.
The Learjet 60 was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it went down in Greenacres, southwest of West Palm Beach. The aircraft crashed into a residential area and burst into flames, killing everyone aboard.
Filgueiras had already achieved a milestone that many aspiring pilots spend years working toward. She earned her pilot’s license in 2023, at just 17 years old, while attending West Boca Raton Community High School.
Her training was supported by the Palm Beach County School District through the school’s aviation academy, where students gained experience with flight simulators, drones and other aviation-related training.
In a television interview at the time, Filgueiras joked about being able to fly an aircraft despite not being able to drive a car. Her unusual achievement reflected how early she had begun pursuing her interest in aviation.
Her family said flying was her greatest passion. Her sister, Giulia, described her as an extraordinary person who had fought until the very end. The family also shared that their Brazilian background and their father’s experience as a pilot helped shape Nathalia’s early connection to flying.
Filgueiras was serving as co-pilot alongside Captain Jeff Gregory when the aircraft encountered dangerous conditions during the flight.
According to information released by investigators and air traffic control recordings, the crew reported turbulence and ice accumulating on the aircraft while flying at approximately 35,000 feet. The pilots requested permission to climb as conditions deteriorated.
The aircraft then began descending rapidly. Radio communications captured the crew declaring an emergency and reporting an increasingly severe loss of altitude before the jet crashed.
The tragedy also claimed the lives of technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp and their two young children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2. Three other passengers, Rachael Reed, Charmi Fehr and Anita Maria Cetina, were also killed.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. Investigators have reported evidence that parts of the aircraft may have separated before impact, and are examining the role of weather conditions and the aircraft’s structural failure. The official cause has not yet been determined.

For those who knew Filgueiras, her death represents the loss of a young woman who had turned an early passion into a career. She had earned her license as a teenager and was already working in the cockpit of a private jet at just 20 years old.
