13-Year-Old Charged After Father of Three Is Fatally Stabbed in Sydney

A man who was reportedly trying to help young people get home safely lost his life in a fatal stabbing in western Sydney. Now, two teenagers have been charged in connection with the case.
The incident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday, October 9, near Westfield Mount Druitt in Sydney, Australia. Police responding to reports of an assault found 36-year-old Joshua Smith with stab wounds to his torso. Despite efforts to save him, he died at the scene.
According to police, Smith had been on his way home from work when he stopped to speak with young people he knew through family and friends. Investigators believe a disagreement involving another group may have led to the fatal confrontation. Police allege that the 13-year-old suspect stabbed Smith twice.
On Sunday, October 11, a 13-year-old boy was arrested and charged with murder, breach of bail, and an unrelated robbery offence. A 16-year-old boy was also arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.

Both teenagers were refused bail and were due to appear before a children’s court on Monday, October 12. Because they are minors, the 13-year-old cannot legally be identified.
Police have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, reviewing CCTV footage and videos recorded on mobile phones. Investigators have also appealed for witnesses and anyone with relevant footage to come forward.
Smith’s death has left his family grieving the loss of a father, son and brother. Authorities have described the incident as deeply distressing, while the investigation continues.
The charges are allegations, and the case remains subject to the legal process.
