The Baby Who Survived 58 Hours in a Well: Where Is Jessica McClure Nearly 40 Years Later?
Nearly four decades after a terrifying accident captured America’s attention, Jessica McClure Morales, once known around the world as “Baby Jessica,” is living a life far removed from the extraordinary rescue that made her famous.
Her story began in October 1987, when she was just 18 months old. What started as an ordinary day in Midland, Texas, turned into a desperate race against time after she fell into an abandoned well.
A Rescue That Captivated Millions
On October 14, 1987, Jessica fell approximately 22 feet into a narrow well in her aunt’s backyard.
For the next 58 hours, rescuers worked to reach the trapped toddler. The operation attracted nationwide attention as television audiences followed the painstaking efforts to bring her safely to the surface.
Her eventual rescue became one of the most memorable human-interest stories of the decade.

Years of Recovery After Her Rescue
Surviving the accident was only the beginning of Jessica’s journey.
She subsequently underwent 15 surgeries, including reconstructive treatment involving her right foot. Although she still carries faint physical scars, she eventually grew up and built a life beyond the extraordinary circumstances of her childhood.
Jessica was so young when the accident happened that she later learned more about her own rescue by watching the television program Rescue 911 when she was four years old.
Building a Life Beyond the Headlines
Today, Jessica lives in rural Texas with her husband, Danny Morales. The couple have two children and grandchildren.
She previously worked as a special education aide and has since been employed at Richards Horticulture in Midland.
A trust fund established following her rescue helped her purchase a home, although much of the money was reportedly lost during the 2008 financial crisis.
A Life That Has Not Been Without Challenges
Jessica’s adult life has also included difficult moments. In April 2026, she was arrested following a reported domestic disturbance and charged with assault causing bodily injury involving family violence.
The incident is part of a more complicated personal story than the childhood rescue through which millions first came to know her.

Nearly 40 Years After the Miracle
As the anniversary of her rescue approaches its fourth decade, Jessica remains connected to an extraordinary moment in American history.
Yet she has also made clear that the accident does not define her entire identity.
Once a little girl whose survival captivated a nation, she is now a mother and grandmother with a lifetime of experiences beyond those 58 hours underground.
