Brazilian Man Suspected in 16 Murders Arrested Disguised as Woman While Carrying Toddler

A 33-year-old man suspected of involvement in a string of murders in northeastern Brazil was arrested while allegedly attempting to evade police disguised as a woman and carrying a toddler who was not his own child.

Jorlan Lopes da Silva, 33, was taken into custody in Mulungu, in Brazil’s Paraíba state, after an operation involving Civil and Military Police. Investigators suspect him of involvement in 16 murders committed over roughly three months, with authorities saying they have strong evidence connected to those recent cases.

According to investigators, Lopes da Silva was wearing a dress and wig, along with women’s sandals, glasses and nail polish when police found him. He was also carrying a child believed to be about 2 years old.

The circumstances surrounding how the toddler came to be with him remain under investigation. Police said the child is not related to Lopes da Silva and was found physically unharmed before receiving medical attention.

Investigators reportedly identified Lopes da Silva after part of his clothing shifted, exposing a tattoo that helped reveal his identity. His arrest came after an operation lasting roughly 48 hours as authorities searched for him.

The investigation took an even more disturbing turn during questioning.

Police say Lopes da Silva claimed that he had killed around 80 people over the course of more than two decades, allegedly beginning when he was 13 years old. He reportedly described his first killing as the death of his father.

However, that figure has not been independently verified. Authorities have confirmed the investigation into 16 recent murders, but his broader claim of approximately 80 victims remains an allegation based on his reported statement and is still being investigated.

Investigators have reportedly located at least one burial site based on information Lopes da Silva provided. Authorities are continuing to examine his statements and investigate whether he can be linked to additional killings.

Brazilian authorities are also investigating possible connections between Lopes da Silva and an organized criminal group operating in the region. Police have said that other individuals were arrested during the broader operation.

Lopes da Silva has since been transferred to a prison in João Pessoa after a preventive detention order was issued. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full extent of his alleged involvement in the killings.

For now, the distinction between what police have evidence to support and what the suspect himself allegedly claimed remains crucial. The 16 recent killings are the focus of the current investigation; the reported claim of 80 victims has not been established as fact.
