Mother Reunites With Daughter in Egypt After Year-Long Separation

A mother from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, has finally been reunited with her young daughter after the child was taken to Egypt by her father nearly a year ago.

Bouchra Marbouhi travelled to Egypt to locate her daughter, Tamara, after the girl was taken out of Canada by her father in September 2025. A Canadian arrest warrant had been issued for the father in connection with the case.

The separation began after Tamara, who was then five years old, went with her father for what her mother understood to be a regular overnight visit. The father subsequently took the child to Egypt.

According to earlier reporting by The Canadian Press, a temporary court order had prohibited either parent from taking Tamara outside the St. John’s area. Canadian authorities later issued an arrest warrant for the father on an alleged abduction charge. The allegations have not been proven in court.

For months, Bouchra did not know where her daughter was. Friends and members of the St. John’s community eventually helped her travel to Egypt in an effort to locate Tamara.

In January, a small group of supporters travelled with Bouchra to Alexandria as part of the search. At that point, they had still been unable to locate the child.

That search has now ended with mother and daughter together again.

VOCM reported on September 23 that Bouchra had been reunited with Tamara in Egypt. The family acknowledged assistance from Egypt’s Ministry of Justice as well as support from people in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The reunion, however, does not yet resolve every issue surrounding the case.

Supporters said on September 24 that there are still legal and jurisdictional matters to be addressed. It remains unclear whether Bouchra and Tamara will immediately return to Canada together.

Olivia Lynch of Violence Prevention Avalon East said Canadian, Moroccan and Egyptian authorities still need to coordinate on the outstanding legal and consular issues.

Despite those complications, the reunion represents a major moment for Bouchra after months of searching for her daughter.

People in St. John’s who supported the family throughout the ordeal have continued to offer assistance as the mother and daughter work through the remaining legal process.

For now, Bouchra has achieved the immediate goal that she and her supporters had spent months working toward: she is finally with her daughter again.
