Overheated Power Strip Sparks Deadly Utah House Fire, Killing Father and Four Children

A devastating house fire in Utah claimed the lives of a father and four of his children after an electrical power strip reportedly overheated and ignited while the family was sleeping.

The fire broke out during the early hours of October 1, 2026, at the Bird family’s three-story home in Riverdale, approximately 35 miles north of Salt Lake City. The blaze spread rapidly through the living room, filling the house with flames and smoke.

The victims were identified as Nathan Bird and four of his children, three daughters and one son. The children who died were between 5 and 12 years old. Nathan’s wife, Lindsey, and two of their sons survived the tragedy, although family members sustained injuries.

According to Riverdale Fire Chief Matthew Hennessey, investigators determined that a power strip near the home’s front entrance had malfunctioned and started the fire. The flames spread through the living room and blocked the main exit, while both staircases became impassable. This left family members sleeping on the upper floors struggling to escape.

Some survivors were rescued through windows, while emergency crews worked to reach those trapped inside. One child died at the scene, and Nathan and several children later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Another child died several days after the fire, bringing the total death toll to five.

Investigators ruled out arson and classified the fire as accidental, according to local reports. The tragedy has shaken the Riverdale community, with the fire chief describing it as the deadliest house fire he had witnessed during his career.

The incident also serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by electrical equipment. Fire officials have urged people to use power strips appropriately and pay attention to the electrical demands of connected devices.

For the surviving family members, the loss of a father and four children has left an unimaginable void. Community members have rallied around the family as they face the difficult days ahead.
