The Tylenol Killer Terrorized America in 1982. Could a Mysterious Death Finally Reveal the Truth?

In 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Tylenol capsules contaminated with cyanide. More than four decades later, investigators are examining a new lead that could shed light on one of America’s most infamous unsolved murder cases.

The victims, whose ages ranged from 12 to 35, died after taking what appeared to be an ordinary over-the-counter pain reliever. The deaths sparked nationwide fear and led to a massive product recall, but the person responsible was never definitively identified.

For years, investigators focused on James Lewis, who sent a letter demanding $1 million from Tylenol’s manufacturer. However, Lewis was never charged with the murders and denied responsibility. He died in 2023.

A new documentary, “Unmasking the Tylenol Killer,” follows Idaho cold-case investigator Tim Cooper as he revisits a mysterious death that occurred in a Boise church in December 1982. The unidentified man, once known as the “Unknown Wanderer,” had died after ingesting cyanide.

Cooper’s investigation eventually identified the man as Dr. Mathew Betkouski, a chemist whose background and movements around the time of the Tylenol poisonings raised new questions. Investigators reportedly discovered a container of homemade cyanide and a map of the Chicago area among belongings connected to Betkouski.

Another significant detail was the gap in his documented whereabouts between September 14 and October 4, 1982, a period that included the fatal poisonings.

According to the documentary, investigators believe these findings warrant a closer examination of whether Betkouski was connected to the killings. However, the evidence remains circumstantial, and authorities have not definitively established that he was responsible.

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office shared its findings with Chicago police, who are responsible for investigating the possible connection to the murders.

For the victims’ families, the new lead may offer hope of answers after decades of uncertainty. But until investigators establish a conclusive link, the identity of the person behind the Tylenol killings remains an unresolved question.
