Two Young Siblings, Ages 6 and 9, Die in House Fire While Parents Are Away

A devastating house fire in Kuala Lumpur claimed the lives of two young siblings after they were reportedly left at home while their parents went out for supper in the early hours of the morning.

The tragedy occurred at around 3:45 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2023, at a single-storey terrace house in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Firefighters responded to the scene, but the children could not be saved.

Firefighters Find Two Children Inside the House

The victims were identified as nine-year-old Nur Syaza Alfisya Muhammad Faizan and her six-year-old brother, Muhammad Al Qayyum Muhammad Faizan.

According to Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis, approximately 22 firefighters and several fire engines were dispatched to tackle the blaze. The fire was brought under control at around 4:13 a.m., after flames had engulfed about 70% of the house.

The children’s bodies were discovered in a room at approximately 4:43 a.m. Authorities believed they may have been trapped inside during the fire. Reports stated that both the room door and the house’s grille gate were locked at the time.

Parents Had Left to Get Food

According to an account given by the children’s grandfather to Malaysian newspaper China Press, the children’s mother was eight months pregnant and had become hungry during the night. She and her husband reportedly left the house to get supper, leaving the two children behind.

The grandfather also said that his granddaughter had asthma and may have been vulnerable to smoke inhalation.

When the children’s mother learned about the fire, she rushed back to the house. The family was left devastated by the loss of both children.

Investigation Into the Fire

Authorities were investigating the cause of the blaze following the incident. The available report did not establish what started the fire or provide a final determination of its cause.

The deaths of the two siblings were a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers children can face when a fire breaks out in a home, particularly when exits may be difficult to access.
