At Least 11 Injured in Shooting Outside Turkish High School
TURGUTLU, MANISA, TURKEY — September 22, 2026

At least 11 people were injured after a gunman opened fire near a vocational and technical high school in western Turkey on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The suspected shooter was arrested shortly after the attack, while investigators launched an inquiry into what led to the shooting. Two of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.

Shooting Near School
The shooting occurred at around 8 a.m. in Turgutlu district, in Turkey’s Manisa province near the city of Izmir.

The Manisa governor’s office said police and medical teams were immediately dispatched after reports of gunfire near the school. Initial reports said at least five people had been wounded, but later information from Turkish officials raised the number to at least 11.

Several reports said students were among those injured.

Suspected Shooter Detained
The suspected attacker was taken into custody by security forces after the shooting.

According to reports cited by the Associated Press, the suspect was believed to be a student at the school. He allegedly used a shotgun taken from his grandmother’s home before opening fire near the school and attempting to flee on foot.

The suspect’s parents and grandfather were also taken into custody as part of the investigation, according to Turkey’s Justice Minister Akin Gurlek.

Authorities have not established a motive. Investigators are examining, among other possibilities, allegations that the suspect had been subjected to bullying at school.

Investigation Underway
Two chief prosecutors have been assigned to investigate the shooting.

The attack caused panic around the school, with parents rushing to the area as police secured the scene. Authorities have not released a full breakdown of the victims or their current medical conditions.

The incident occurred only days after the start of Turkey’s 2026–2027 school year and follows two school shootings in the country earlier this year. Those attacks prompted authorities to introduce additional security measures at schools.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet announced any final findings about the motive.
