Couple and Their Two Dogs Survive Terrifying Plane Crash After Aircraft Becomes Trapped in Trees

A North Carolina couple and their two beloved dogs survived a terrifying nighttime plane crash after the aircraft lost engine power and became lodged in trees just feet above the ground.
Dustin Davis and his wife, Autumn, were flying from Hickory to their beach house in Ocean Isle Beach on October 7 after attending church. Their two dogs, Sophie and Royce, were also aboard their single-engine Piper PA-32.
The flight initially appeared routine, but the situation quickly changed when the engine stopped producing power at approximately 6,000 feet.
Dustin, who was piloting the aircraft, realized they had only minutes to find somewhere to land. The nearest airport was about eight miles away, but he said the plane no longer had enough power to reach it. Darkness also made it difficult to identify a safe landing spot below.
As the couple tried to work out what to do, Autumn asked her husband how she could help. His response was simple: “Babe, just pray, just pray.”
Dustin contacted air traffic control and continued trying to manage the aircraft. With no clear landing area visible, he eventually turned toward the darkness. Moments later, he saw trees directly ahead and prepared for impact.
He pulled the nose of the plane upward in an attempt to reduce the force of the collision. The aircraft struck the trees and came to rest suspended above the ground, with the tree stopping it roughly six feet from the ground.
Once they realized they had survived, the couple used their phones to assess their surroundings and get out of the wreckage with their dogs.
Dustin suffered a black eye after hitting his head against the dashboard, while Autumn experienced soreness in her neck and back. Both were taken for medical evaluation, and their two dogs escaped without injuries.
Reflecting on the experience, Dustin said it had given him a renewed appreciation for life and changed the way he viewed everyday worries. He described feeling as though he had been given a fresh start and wanted to make the most of the time ahead.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash to determine what caused the engine to lose power. No final cause has been announced.

What began as an ordinary flight home became a frightening fight to survive in the darkness. For the Davises, the fact that all four made it out alive is a memory they are unlikely to forget.
