Hero Father Who Stopped Oregon School Shooter Reveals the Guilt He Still Carries

A father of two who fatally shot a gunman during a deadly elementary school attack in Oregon has spoken about the terrifying moments inside the school and the emotional toll he has struggled with since.
Kaylub Giamanco, 36, was driving near Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on October 15, 2026, when he saw the armed teenager firing at a vehicle outside the building. After realizing children were in danger, he followed the suspect into the school, according to his account to Oregon Public Broadcasting.
The attack killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert. Another child and a teacher were critically injured. Police identified the suspected shooter as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a former student at the school.
Giamanco said he called 911 but decided he could not wait for officers to arrive. He entered the building and made his way toward a special education classroom, where he heard gunfire and children screaming.
Inside, a teacher had already confronted the gunman and struggled with him in an effort to stop the attack. Giamanco said he then fired at the teenager, who died at the scene. Police praised both the father and the teacher for their actions, saying their intervention likely prevented further loss of life.
But despite being widely praised as a hero, Giamanco has described the lasting emotional impact of what happened. He said he continues to replay the incident in his mind, remembering the faces and voices of those caught in the shooting.
He also expressed anguish over the children who died, saying he wished he could have saved everyone. His family has said he never sought public recognition and has asked for privacy while he and his daughters cope with the aftermath.

Giamanco has said he hopes to use his experience to help improve school safety and support the community. Meanwhile, investigators continue examining the shooting, including how the teenage suspect obtained the firearm used in the attack.
