Burning Man Deaths: Toxicology Reports Reveal Drugs Played a Role in Two Fatalities

Three men died during the 2026 Burning Man festival in Nevada, and newly released medical examiner findings have revealed that drug toxicity contributed to two of the deaths.
The annual gathering, held in the Black Rock Desert from August 30 to September 7, drew tens of thousands of participants. The three deaths occurred within days of one another, prompting questions about what happened during the festival.
One of the men was Tshombe Sampson, 62, of Santa Monica, California. He collapsed on September 3 and was pronounced dead at the festival’s temporary medical center. The medical examiner attributed his death to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
The following day, Armando Ramirez, 51, of Truckee, California, experienced chest pain and died while being transported by ambulance to a hospital in Reno. Authorities determined that his death was accidental and involved the toxic effects of methamphetamine and MDMA, along with heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Long-term methamphetamine use was also listed as a contributing factor.
The third man, Craig Mann, 60, of Yuma, Arizona, was found unresponsive in the recreational vehicle he was sharing with his partner on September 5. His death was also ruled accidental. The medical examiner cited cocaine and methamphetamine toxicity, along with cardiovascular disease.
Authorities said none of the three deaths was considered suspicious or involved foul play. The findings do not establish that drugs played a role in all three cases: Sampson’s death was attributed to cardiovascular disease.

Burning Man organizers expressed condolences to the families and urged the public to avoid speculation while respecting the privacy of those affected.
The festival is known for its art installations, large-scale communal projects and desert setting, where participants must prepare for extreme conditions. This year’s three deaths were higher than the event’s reported average of approximately one death annually.
The medical examiner’s findings have clarified the circumstances behind two of the fatalities, while underscoring that the deaths had different causes.
