Grieving Mothers Face Teen Accused of Killing Their Daughters in E-Bike Crash

Two grieving New Jersey mothers came face-to-face with the teenager accused of killing their daughters as he appeared in court to answer two first-degree murder charges.
Vincent Battiloro, 18, pleaded not guilty on October 26 in connection with the deaths of Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas, two 17-year-old best friends who were riding an electric bike in Cranford, New Jersey, on September 29, 2025.
Prosecutors allege that Battiloro, who was 17 at the time, deliberately drove his Jeep into the girls before leaving the scene. Both teenagers died from their injuries. He was arrested two days later and was subsequently charged as an adult.
The courtroom appearance was especially painful for the girls’ families. Their mothers attended the hearing wearing shirts honoring their daughters, as loved ones continued to seek answers about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The families have also raised concerns about the events leading up to the deaths and called for New Jersey’s attorney general to investigate law enforcement’s interactions with Battiloro and his family. They say they want greater transparency about how the case was handled.
The defense, meanwhile, has indicated it may pursue a diminished-capacity defense and seek to move the proceedings to another location.
Battiloro’s not-guilty plea means the charges remain allegations, and the case has yet to be decided at trial. His next hearing is scheduled for December 14.

For the two families, the court proceedings are part of a painful search for accountability after the loss of two teenagers whose lives were cut short.
