Texas Father Serving 21-Year Sentence in Russia Still Hopes to Reunite With His Sons

An American father from Texas remains imprisoned in Russia, serving a 21-year sentence after a case involving allegations of child abuse that his family says should never have led to his conviction.

David Barnes was arrested in Moscow on January 13, 2022, after traveling to Russia in an effort to reconnect with his two sons, who had been taken there by his Russian ex-wife, Svetlana Koptyaeva, amid a bitter custody dispute.

Russian prosecutors accused Barnes of sexually abusing his children in Texas. He denied the allegations, and authorities in Montgomery County, Texas, previously investigated the claims without filing criminal charges. A Texas court had also awarded Barnes custody rights, according to reports.

Barnes was convicted by a Russian court in February 2024 and sentenced to 21 years in prison. His legal team challenged the case, but a Moscow court rejected his appeal in April 2025 and increased his sentence by six months.

His relatives and friends have continued to campaign for his release, arguing that the case was unfair and that Russian authorities should not have prosecuted him over alleged conduct that took place in the United States. The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation lists Barnes as a wrongful detainee.

Koptyaeva, however, has maintained that the allegations against Barnes are true. The conflicting accounts have made the case particularly contentious, with the two sides sharply disagreeing over what happened and whether the Russian proceedings were justified.

Barnes was later transferred to a remote Russian penal colony, according to ABC News. His family has expressed concern about his health and the conditions of his confinement, while continuing to hope that diplomatic efforts could eventually bring him home.

As other Americans have returned from Russian custody through prisoner exchanges, Barnes’ relatives remain anxious for news of his future. For them, the central question is whether he will be able to leave prison and reunite with his children after years apart.
