The Warm Locket PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE LOCKET

The Warm Locket
PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND THE LOCKET
“Emma, come inside,” Alexander said, his voice unusually tense. “We need to talk.”
Emma stared at him, then at Gabriel Romano.
“My mother left a message telling someone to bring me to you. Your daughter’s mother was my mother’s sister—or perhaps I don’t even understand what’s happening anymore.” Her voice trembled. “I want the truth. All of it.”
Alexander glanced at Gabriel.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Gabriel slowly nodded. “She deserves to know.”
Inside the mansion, Lily sat beside the fireplace, unaware that the adults around her were about to uncover a secret buried for twenty-three years.
Alexander led Emma into his private study and closed the door.
“Your mother, Isabella, was born into the Romano family,” Gabriel began. “Our father built an empire, but he also made enemies. When Isabella fell in love with a man he considered unsuitable, he threatened to destroy them both.”
“Who was my father?” Emma asked immediately.
Gabriel hesitated.
“Daniel Hayes.”
Emma looked at Alexander.
He lowered his eyes.
“My younger brother,” he admitted. “Daniel died in a car accident twenty-three years ago. He was only twenty-six.”
Emma felt the room spin.
All her life, she had imagined her parents abandoning her because they didn’t want her. Now she was hearing that her father had died before she could even remember his face.
“And my mother?”

“Isabella disappeared shortly after Daniel’s death,” Gabriel explained. “We searched everywhere. Your grandfather believed she had taken you and fled the country. He refused to accept that she might have been murdered.”
“Murdered?” Emma whispered.
Alexander walked to his desk and opened a locked drawer. He removed a thick envelope containing old newspaper clippings and a photograph.
It showed Isabella holding a newborn baby outside a hospital.
The baby wore a tiny silver bracelet.
Emma touched her wrist instinctively, remembering the faded mark where a similar bracelet had once been.
“Three days after this photograph was taken, your mother vanished,” Alexander said. “A nurse reported that someone had taken you from the hospital. The official records said you had been abandoned.”
“So somebody stole me?”
“We don’t know for certain,” Gabriel replied. “But Isabella would never have abandoned you willingly. She loved you more than anything.”
Emma turned away, struggling to breathe.
Twenty-three years of believing she had been unwanted suddenly felt like a cruel lie.
“Why didn’t anyone find me?”
Gabriel’s face twisted with regret. “Because someone made sure we never could.”
Alexander placed another photograph on the desk.
It showed a younger man standing beside Isabella. On the back was a handwritten message:
If anything happens to me, protect my daughter from Richard.
Emma looked up.
“Who is Richard?”
Before either man could answer, the study door opened.
Lily stood in the doorway, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?” she asked timidly. “Why is Emma crying?”
Alexander immediately knelt beside her.
“She’s learning something important about her family, sweetheart.”
Lily looked at Emma, then wrapped her little arms around her waist.
“You can stay with us,” she whispered. “You don’t have to be sad alone.”
Emma hugged her tightly.
For the first time, the idea of having a family didn’t feel like a dream meant for someone else.
Then Gabriel’s phone rang.
He answered, listened for a few seconds, and went completely pale.
“What happened?” Alexander demanded.
Gabriel slowly lowered the phone.
“Richard knows she’s here.”
Alexander’s expression hardened.
“That’s impossible.”
“He was seen leaving the airport an hour ago. He’s coming to Westchester.”
Emma felt the silver locket grow warm again.
Alexander stared at it, then at her.
“Emma, listen carefully. Richard Hayes is our uncle. He’s the man who controlled the family after Daniel died.”
He paused.
“And if he discovers what that locket contains, he may try to take everything from you.”
Emma clutched the silver pendant.
“What exactly is inside it?”
Gabriel exchanged a troubled look with Alexander.
“The proof that your mother was the rightful heir to the Romano fortune.”
