He Seated His Mistress Beside Him at Their Anniversary Dinner—Then His Wife Announced the Auction

PART 1 — THE WIFE WHO REFUSED TO CRY

“Margaret, bring Evelyn another glass of wine. She’s our guest tonight.”

Those were the words Richard Blackwood spoke to his wife in front of eighty guests at their twentieth wedding anniversary dinner.

Margaret stood frozen beside the beautifully decorated table.

For twenty years, she had been Richard’s wife. She had helped him build Blackwood Ranch from a struggling cattle operation into one of the wealthiest properties in Montana.

And tonight, the woman sitting in Margaret’s rightful place was Richard’s mistress.

Evelyn Carter, twenty-eight years old, wore a red silk dress and the diamond necklace Richard had supposedly purchased for a business associate.

“Richard,” Margaret whispered, “that’s my chair.”

Richard barely looked at her.

“Don’t embarrass me in front of our guests. Evelyn is important to our business. Find another seat.”

A few guests lowered their eyes. Others exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Evelyn smiled sweetly.

“Oh, Margaret, don’t be upset. Twenty years is such a long time. Sometimes a man simply needs something new.”

Richard chuckled.

Margaret’s hands trembled, but she didn’t cry.

Instead, she quietly poured the wine.

“You’re remarkably understanding,” Evelyn said, deliberately touching Richard’s arm.

Margaret placed the bottle on the table.

“Actually, Evelyn, I’ve learned quite a lot about understanding over the past six months.”

Richard frowned.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing you need to worry about. Not yet.”

Then Margaret walked toward the small stage where the musicians had been playing.

She tapped a silver spoon against her champagne glass.

“Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention?”

The room fell silent.

Richard leaned back in his chair, looking pleased.

He assumed his wife was about to deliver a sentimental speech celebrating their marriage.

Margaret smiled.

“Twenty years ago, my husband promised we would share everything. Our home, our dreams, our hardships… and our fortune.”

She paused.

“Unfortunately, Richard has recently forgotten what the word share means.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“Margaret, sit down.”

She continued.

“Three months ago, I discovered that nearly $800,000 had disappeared from our ranch accounts.”

A shocked murmur swept through the room.

Richard stood abruptly.

“That’s enough!”

Margaret raised one hand.

“And yesterday, a judge signed an order allowing certain jointly owned assets to be sold at a court-authorized auction to recover money my husband secretly diverted.”

Evelyn slowly removed her hand from Richard’s arm.

“What auction?” Richard demanded.

Margaret reached beneath the podium and lifted a sealed envelope.

“The auction begins tomorrow morning.”

She looked directly at Evelyn.

“And the first item on the inventory is something you both seem particularly fond of.”

Richard’s face turned pale.

“Margaret… what have you done?”

Before she could answer, the dining room doors opened.

A gray-haired attorney entered carrying a thick leather folder.

He approached Richard and placed a document on the table.

“Mr. Blackwood,” he said, “you’ve been officially served.”

Richard stared at the first page.

Then he looked up at his wife.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

Margaret’s smile vanished.

“Richard, you brought your mistress to our anniversary dinner.”

She took off her wedding ring and placed it beside his untouched champagne glass.

“Did you really think I came here to celebrate?”

But when Richard turned to the second page of the court order, he discovered something far more terrifying than the auction itself.

And the name printed at the bottom made Evelyn suddenly rise from her chair….
