The Last Goodbye
PART 3 — The Man Who Finally Understood
Six weeks passed.
Ethan stopped attending business dinners. He barely slept and spent every waking hour searching for me and Grace.
Then Marcus discovered an address hidden inside one of my old medical files.
A small seaside house in Maine.
Ethan flew there immediately.
When he arrived, he saw me standing on the front porch, holding a little girl wrapped in a cream-colored blanket.
I looked thinner than he remembered.
But my eyes were different.
There was no warmth left in them.
“Emily.”
I tightened my arms around Grace.
“What are you doing here?”
Ethan took one step forward.
“Please. Let me see my daughter.”
I stared at him.
“You had thirteen years to be a husband. You had one night to be a father. You failed at both.”
His face crumpled.
“I didn’t know about Grace.”

“You didn’t know because you never asked.”
“I thought we had lost both babies.”
“You thought about Madison. You thought about your business. You thought about everything except me.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“I am sorry.”
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.
Then I remembered the hospital room.
The empty chair.
The six unanswered calls.
And the tiny white shoes waiting in our bedroom.
“Sorry doesn’t bring our baby back, Ethan.”
He began to cry.
“I would give everything to change that night.”
I looked at him quietly.
“Then give up the woman who helped destroy our family. Tell the truth about what happened. And stop treating people like things you can buy.”
Before he could answer, a black SUV appeared at the end of the road.
Marcus stepped out.
“Mr. Carter, we have a problem.”
Madison had been arrested after investigators uncovered her father’s illegal operations and her involvement in stealing confidential Carter family records.
But before her arrest, she had sent Ethan one final message.
It contained a photograph of Grace.
Taken outside the hospital.
Underneath it were the words:
You should have listened to me when I told you that Emily’s child would never belong in our family.
Ethan’s expression turned cold.
He immediately ordered additional protection around the house and contacted the authorities.
For the first time, he understood why I had disappeared.
I hadn’t been running away from him.
I had been protecting our daughter from the dangerous world he had brought into our lives.
That evening, Ethan stood outside the house.
He didn’t ask to come inside.
He simply looked through the window at me holding Grace.
“Emily,” he whispered, “I know I don’t deserve another chance. But please let me be her father.”
I didn’t answer immediately.
Finally, I said:
“You can apply to be part of her life. Through lawyers. Through supervised visits. And only if you prove that you can put her safety before your empire.”
He nodded.
“I will.”
Then he walked away.
For once, Ethan Carter didn’t demand anything.
