Florida Parents Furious After Students Are Seen Wading Through Waist-Deep Floodwater After School Bus Drop-Off

Disturbing footage from Port St. Lucie, Florida, has sparked outrage after students were filmed stepping off a school bus and making their way through deep floodwater as torrential rain overwhelmed the region.

The video, recorded on Monday, November 2, shows children walking through water that reaches around their waists. One student appears to encounter an even deeper section near a truck. The footage was captured by Martina Elieson, who questioned why the bus had dropped the children off in one of the deepest areas before driving away in a direction where the water was not as high.

The incident unfolded as historic rainfall caused widespread flooding across parts of Florida. Between 14 and 22 inches of rain were recorded in the affected area by Monday evening, with the National Weather Service describing the rainfall as a potential one-in-1,000-year event.

Parents expressed anger over the decision to keep schools open on Monday despite growing concerns about dangerous weather and flooded roads. Some families reportedly struggled to reach their children, while others described lengthy journeys home as roads became impassable.

As conditions deteriorated, the school district arranged an early dismissal, requiring bus drivers to return and transport students home. The decision created additional challenges for families and school employees dealing with rapidly worsening conditions.

St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jon R. Prince later issued an apology to families and staff. He said the district’s decision had been based on information available from emergency officials and weather authorities at the time, but acknowledged the extraordinary nature of the flooding and the stress experienced by the community.

The superintendent also thanked teachers, school staff, bus drivers and security teams who worked to help students get home safely.

Schools in St. Lucie County were subsequently scheduled to remain closed on Wednesday, November 4, with officials anticipating a reopening on Thursday, November 5.

The flooding extended far beyond school transportation. Emergency crews carried out rescues across the region as homes, roads and vehicles were submerged. Authorities urged residents to avoid flooded streets and warned that standing water could conceal serious dangers.

The shocking school-bus footage has intensified questions about how children were transported during the storm and whether more could have been done to protect students as floodwaters continued to rise.
