Man Dies After Saving Mother and Two Children From Floodwaters in the Philippines

A 41-year-old man in the Philippines died after helping rescue a mother and her two young children from powerful floodwaters in Quezon City, according to local reports.

The man, Jerland Enriquez, lived in Barangay Unang Sigaw, where heavy rain caused flooding around a creek in the area. During the flooding, he noticed a woman and two children struggling in the fast-moving water.

Enriquez went into the floodwaters to help them. The mother, Jean Rose Reyes, and her two children, aged 2 and 4, were eventually brought to safety.

Reyes and her children were injured during the incident after being struck by pieces of wood and other debris carried by the rushing water. Despite those injuries, all three survived.

Enriquez, however, did not make it home.

He was reported missing for more than three days after the rescue. On the morning of September 24, his body was found in a section of the San Francisco River in Barangay Damayan.

Reyes later remembered Enriquez as a kind and generous person who was willing to help others even when he had little himself. She credited him with saving the lives of her family during the flood.

The circumstances of the flooding illustrate the dangers created by rapidly moving water. Flood currents can carry debris and become difficult to navigate even over relatively short distances.

For Enriquez’s family, the rescue ended with a devastating loss. His relatives said the news had been passed on to his wife and two children, while those who knew him remembered him for regularly helping people around him.
