French Bulldog Dies After Trying to Protect California Couple From Bear Attack

Trinity County, California, USA — September 28, 2026

A Northern California couple is recovering from serious injuries after a black bear attacked them outside their home, while their seven-year-old French bulldog died after trying to protect them, according to local and international news reports.

Bear Attacks Couple Outside Their Home

The incident happened early on September 19 in Trinity County, California.

According to reports, Jeff Wilson went outside after his dog, Cassie, alerted him. A black bear suddenly charged him near the couple’s home.

The bear knocked Wilson into the side of the house and attacked him, leaving him with broken ribs and multiple bite and claw injuries.

Dog Moves Between Owner and Bear

During the attack, Cassie ran toward the bear and moved between the animal and her owner.

The dog was seriously injured during the encounter. Mallory Wilson then came outside after hearing the commotion and was also attacked while attempting to help.

Both Jeff and Mallory suffered serious injuries and required medical treatment.

Cassie Dies From Her Injuries

Cassie survived the initial attack but died two days later from her injuries.

The couple described Cassie as a deeply loved member of their family and said her loss had added to the emotional impact of the incident.

A fundraiser was established to help the couple with medical expenses, veterinary costs, property damage and lost income while they recover.

Wildlife Officials Investigate

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

Wildlife officials said black bear encounters resulting in human injuries are rare in California. Authorities advise residents to avoid attracting bears by securing food, garbage and other potential food sources.

The couple has also said they continue to respect the wildlife in the area and are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
