Kentucky Trooper Killed During Traffic Stop as Suspect Faces Murder Charge

A Kentucky State Police trooper was fatally shot during a traffic stop on an interstate highway, and a Tennessee man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the killing.

Trooper Hayden Phillips was conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Warren County, Kentucky, on September 28 when he was shot, according to authorities.

Phillips was a three-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police and was based in Bowling Green. He was also a husband and father of three children.

Traffic stop turns deadly

According to the criminal complaint reported by local media, Phillips had stopped a Honda Civic on northbound Interstate 65 near mile marker 38.

The vehicle had an expired temporary registration tag, according to the complaint. Phillips approached the vehicle and interacted with the driver before gunshots were fired.

Investigators said the trooper’s in-car camera captured part of the encounter. Authorities have not publicly released the full footage or provided every detail of what happened immediately before the shooting.

A passing motorist reported the shooting, and law enforcement officers quickly began searching for the vehicle involved.

Suspect arrested nearly 100 miles away

The suspect was identified as 51-year-old Emonnie Dion Branch of Portland, Tennessee.

After the shooting, the vehicle left the area. Police later located Branch in Jefferson County, roughly 94 miles from the location of the traffic stop.

Louisville authorities arrested him, and he was subsequently ordered to be held without bail while facing a murder charge related to the death of Phillips.

Authorities said Branch had also been wanted on a parole or probation violation in Tennessee.

Investigation continues

Officials have not disclosed a clear motive for the shooting. Investigators are continuing to examine the traffic stop, the evidence recovered after the arrest and the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.

Authorities have also not released every detail of the interaction between Phillips and Branch before the shooting.

The case will now proceed through the court system. The murder charge is an allegation, and Branch is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Community remembers the officer

News of Phillips’ death prompted tributes from fellow law enforcement officers and members of his community.

Phillips had served with Kentucky State Police for three years. He was remembered as a member of the Bowling Green-area law enforcement community and as a father and husband.

A criminal investigation remains underway as prosecutors prepare to pursue the case against the accused.
