11-Month-Old Grayson Walton Found Dead Inside Couch After Babysitter Allegedly Gave False Account

An 11-month-old Kentucky boy was found dead inside a couch after the teenager who was supposed to be caring for him allegedly told police that a family friend had picked him up.

Grayson Walton was left in the care of 19-year-old Elijah Mayes while his father went to work on September 11, according to Central City police. Later that night, Mayes allegedly told investigators that a family friend had picked up the baby at around 10 p.m.

The following day, Grayson’s father contacted police after he was unable to locate his son. Officers tracked down the person Mayes had identified and interviewed her. She told investigators that she had never picked up Grayson.

A relative also told police that the baby had last been seen with Mayes at a residence on Hillview Street in Cleaton on September 11. Investigators then obtained search warrants for properties connected to the case.

During a search of a residence on Harrison Avenue, authorities reported finding suspected methamphetamine. Police then searched another residence on Hillview Street in Cleaton, where they made the devastating discovery: Grayson was found dead inside a couch.

A criminal citation obtained by local media described additional disturbing findings. Police said the infant appeared to be covered in bruises and had marks on his stomach that appeared consistent with teeth marks. The exact cause and manner of Grayson’s death remain subject to the ongoing investigation and forensic examination.

Investigators also allege that Mayes attempted to create a false account of what happened. According to the citation, he allegedly created a fake phone number and sent messages to himself while pretending to be the person he claimed had taken the baby.

Mayes was arrested and charged with murder, first-degree criminal abuse, tampering with physical evidence, abuse of a corpse and possession of a controlled substance. He has pleaded not guilty, according to later reporting.

Grayson’s death has devastated the small Kentucky community. Family and friends gathered for a prayer vigil on September 17, remembering the infant and calling for justice as the investigation continues.

The case remains ongoing, and the allegations against Mayes have not been proven in court. Authorities have not publicly announced a final determination of exactly how Grayson died.
