A 51-year-old woman has been seriously injured after she was allegedly attacked with a kitchen knife on a tram in Melbourne, with police arresting a 37-year-old man at the scene.

The incident occurred around midday on Tuesday as the woman was travelling on a Route 1 tram through South Melbourne.
Police allege that a man suddenly lunged at the woman with a kitchen knife while the tram was travelling along Eastern Road.
The tram stopped shortly afterwards near Kings Way as passengers and witnesses responded to the incident.
Police Quickly Arrest Suspect
Police arrived at the scene and arrested the alleged attacker in front of a number of people who had gathered nearby.
Witness footage showed officers securing the area while emergency crews moved towards the tram to provide medical assistance.
The arrested man was identified by police as a 37-year-old man of no fixed address. Investigators were expected to interview him about the alleged assault.
Victim Taken to Hospital
The woman suffered a serious stab wound and was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.
Witnesses told ABC News that the woman had been travelling with her dog when the attack occurred.
Emergency crews faced difficult traffic conditions as they moved quickly to reach the injured passenger.
