Accused Stockton Serial Killer Wesley Brownlee Remains Behind Bars as Case Faces Further Delays

A California man accused of a series of deadly shootings that terrorized Stockton and parts of the Bay Area remains in custody as his case continues through a lengthy legal process.

Wesley Brownlee was arrested in October 2022 after investigators linked him to a series of shootings spanning from April 2021 to October 2022. At the time of his arrest, police said officers had been monitoring his movements and believed they intervened before another potential attack.

In November 2022, a San Joaquin County judge ordered Brownlee to remain in jail without bail. He was facing murder charges connected to shootings in Stockton, where several victims were killed during the summer and fall of that year.

Investigators said ballistic evidence connected multiple crime scenes. Police also reported that Brownlee was carrying a handgun when officers stopped him in the early hours of October 15, 2022. Authorities have not publicly established a definitive motive for the attacks.

The case later expanded. Brownlee was indicted in 2025 on six counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, along with firearm-related charges. Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

However, the proceedings have been complicated by questions about whether Brownlee is mentally competent to stand trial. His defense attorneys have reported that he has stopped communicating with them, raising concerns about their ability to represent him effectively.

In 2026, the court scheduled a separate proceeding to determine his competency. That process is distinct from a criminal trial and does not determine whether he committed the alleged crimes.

The victims included Juan Vazquez-Serrano, Paul Yaw, Salvador Debudey Jr., Jonathan Hernandez-Rodriguez, Juan Carlos Carranza-Cruz and Lawrence Lopez Sr. Natasha LaTour survived an alleged attempted killing and has followed the case as it moves through court.

Brownlee has not been convicted of these charges, and the allegations must be tested through the legal process. The competency proceedings will help determine whether the criminal case can proceed to trial.
