California Inmate Accused of Killing Cellmate Who Was Serving Life for Child Trafficking

A homicide investigation inside a California state prison drew attention in November 2024 after an inmate was accused of killing his cellmate, who was serving a life sentence for human trafficking involving a minor and other offenses.
Authorities identified the suspect as Gregory Clark, 58, and the deceased inmate as Darius Swain, 41. The incident occurred at Kern Valley State Prison, where correctional officials launched an investigation into the death.
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, officers found Clark with blood on his clothing at approximately 3:19 p.m. on November 9, 2024. Swain was found unresponsive inside their shared cell, and medical staff immediately began lifesaving efforts.

Swain was later pronounced dead at 3:48 p.m.
Swain had been transferred to the prison in March 2019 after receiving a life sentence with the possibility of parole in Alameda County. His convictions included human trafficking of a minor involving force, pimping, pandering, second-degree robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Clark had been incarcerated since 2011, serving a 22-year sentence for domestic violence and related offenses. In 2021, he received an additional two-year sentence for assaulting another prisoner with a deadly weapon.
Following the incident, Clark was placed in restrictive housing while the prison’s Investigative Services Unit investigated the circumstances surrounding Swain’s death.
At the time of the report, authorities had not released details about what led to the alleged killing. The Kern County Coroner was expected to determine the cause of death.
The case highlights the serious challenges correctional facilities face when investigating violence between incarcerated individuals. Although Clark was accused of killing his cellmate, officials had not established a public motive in the initial report.
