He Caught His Fiancée Kissing His Younger Brother Three Days Before Their Wedding—Then Discovered the Secret Their Father Had Buried for Years

Part 1: Opening

The wedding was only three days away when Caleb Morgan caught his fiancée kissing his brother.

He hadn’t meant to come home early.

After spending two weeks buying supplies in the neighboring territory, Caleb had planned to surprise Clara with a new wedding dress and the silver bracelet she had admired in town.

Instead, he found her standing in the hayloft with his younger brother, Daniel.

Daniel’s hands were around her waist.

Clara’s eyes were closed.

And they were kissing.

The parcel slipped from Caleb’s fingers and landed in the dirt.

Neither of them heard it.

For several seconds, Caleb couldn’t move. He simply stood in the barn doorway, watching the two people he trusted most destroy everything he had believed about his future.

Then he stepped into the light.

“That’s quite a way to welcome your future brother-in-law.”

Clara pulled away so quickly that she nearly stumbled.

Daniel turned.

His face lost all color.

“Caleb…”

“Don’t.”

Caleb looked at Clara.

“Tell me I didn’t just see what I think I saw.”

Her lips trembled.

“Please, let me explain.”

“Explain what? That you couldn’t wait three more days to become my wife before kissing my brother?”

Daniel stepped forward.

“It isn’t what you think.”

Caleb let out a bitter laugh.

“Then perhaps you can tell me what it is.”

His brother lowered his eyes.

For years, Daniel had been the one person Caleb would have trusted with his life. After their father died, Caleb had worked himself nearly to exhaustion to keep the family ranch alive. He had paid Daniel’s debts, given him a home, and treated him like an equal even when the townspeople called him nothing but a reckless younger son.

And Clara?

She had been the reason Caleb had finally stopped living only for the ranch.

He had met her two years earlier at a church supper. She had laughed at his terrible dancing, teased him about his stubbornness, and somehow made him believe that happiness was still possible.

Now both stood before him with the same guilty silence.

Caleb picked up his hat.

“Get out of my barn.”

Clara reached for his arm.

“Caleb, please. You don’t understand what Daniel and I—”

He pulled away.

“Don’t say you love me. Not after this.”

Daniel finally looked up.

“Maybe you should hear the truth before you decide what happened.”

Caleb stopped at the doorway.

“What truth?”

Daniel glanced at Clara.

She shook her head desperately.

“Not here,” she whispered.

Caleb’s anger turned to suspicion.

“What are you two hiding?”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“Clara and I have been meeting for months. But it wasn’t because we wanted to betray you.”

Caleb stared at him.

“Then why?”

Daniel took a step closer and lowered his voice.

“Because we discovered something about our father. Something he made us promise never to tell you.”

Caleb frowned.

Their father had been dead for nearly fifteen years.

“What could the old man possibly have to do with this?”

Clara began crying.

Then Daniel said the words that made Caleb’s blood run cold.

“Your wedding isn’t the reason Clara agreed to marry you. She came to this ranch because she was looking for something our father buried before he died.”

Caleb looked between them.

“What did he bury?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he reached inside his coat and pulled out an old photograph.

It showed their father standing beside a woman Caleb had never seen before.

In the woman’s arms was a baby.

On the back, written in their father’s unmistakable handwriting, were five words:

“My first son. My greatest mistake.”

Caleb stared at the photograph.

The baby had his eyes.

And beneath the photograph was a date.

A date from two years before Caleb was born.

Before he could ask another question, a gunshot shattered the silence outside.

Daniel grabbed Clara’s hand.

“Get down!”

A second shot struck the barn door.

Then a man’s voice rang out from the darkness.

“Hand over the photograph, Caleb. Your father should have taken that secret to his grave.”

Caleb reached for his revolver.

Suddenly, he understood.

His brother and his fiancée might have been hiding something from him.

But someone else was willing to kill to make certain he never discovered what it was.
