Former Michigan Children’s Hospital Nurse Charged After Premature Baby Found With Multiple Injuries

A former nurse at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is facing child-abuse charges after a premature baby girl was discovered with multiple injuries while receiving intensive medical care.

Kieran Ansley, 43, has been charged with four counts of child abuse in connection with the case. The allegations stem from injuries suffered by the infant, who had spent months in the hospital after being born extremely prematurely.

The baby was born in November 2025 at just 23 weeks’ gestation and weighed approximately one pound (0.45 kilograms). Because of her premature birth, she remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit for months. According to her family, she was approaching the possibility of being discharged in April 2026.

On the morning of April 3, 2026, the baby’s mother visited the hospital and noticed bruising that had not been present when she had seen her daughter the previous evening.

The infant’s tongue was also described as having a blue-purple or nearly black appearance, prompting further medical examination. Doctors subsequently identified multiple bone fractures and bruising in different areas of the child’s body.

Court records state that the collective medical findings led doctors to diagnose the injuries as physical abuse. The investigation then focused on what happened during the period when the baby was under hospital care.

Staff logs reportedly showed that the infant’s room was entered 32 times during the night in question. Ansley was recorded as being involved in 27 of those entries, according to court documents. Investigators are reviewing that information as part of the case, but the number of room entries alone does not establish that Ansley caused the injuries.

Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital said Ansley’s employment was terminated after the allegations were received. The hospital has also stated that it is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues.

Ansley has been released on bond while the criminal case proceeds. Her attorney, Damian Nunzio, said his client has cooperated with investigators and expressed confidence that the legal process would clarify the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

The case remains pending, and Ansley has not been found guilty of the charges. The prosecution will have to establish its allegations in court, while the defense will have an opportunity to challenge the evidence.
