Mother Duck Sits on an Empty Nest for 34 Days, Until One Family Makes an Unexpected Discovery

For 34 days, a mother duck named Moira continued sitting on her empty nest, seemingly waiting for eggs that would never hatch. What began as a heartbreaking sight in a South Florida backyard eventually turned into a story of patience, compassion and an unexpected new beginning.

Monica Abramov and her husband, Dima, first noticed Moira after she lost the only duckling that had hatched from her nest. Even after the nest became empty, the mother duck continued to sit there, appearing determined to become a mother again.

The family tried several ways to help. They first introduced ducklings purchased from a local store, but Moira rejected them. They later attempted to introduce other ducklings found near their property, but those efforts were also unsuccessful.

Unwilling to give up, the couple eventually obtained fertile eggs from a hatchery. After 34 days, one of the eggs finally hatched.

The family named the newborn duckling Miri, short for “Miracle.” With the arrival of her new baby, Moira finally left the empty nest, and the pair began a new chapter together.

The experience also changed the Abramov family’s relationship with the animals around their home. Their social media account, @ChaosWithMaggie, has attracted attention from people who enjoy watching their efforts to care for ducks and other neighborhood wildlife.

What started as a family trying to help one struggling mother duck became a touching reminder of how a small act of kindness can lead to an unexpected outcome.
