Mother of Newlywed Killed in Truck Crash Demands Answers as Driver’s Criminal Case Approaches

Elizabeth Carter says the deaths of her 25-year-old son, Billy, and his 24-year-old wife, Jenny, changed her life forever. Nearly a year after the newlyweds were killed in a highway crash in Oregon, she is speaking out about the circumstances surrounding the collision and the legal proceedings still ahead.

According to Carter’s account in the Daily Mail, the couple died when their car encountered an 18-wheel tractor-trailer that had jackknifed across the highway at night. The truck was allegedly blocking both directions of traffic without its hazard lights or other warnings activated.

The driver, Rajinder Kumar, was arrested following the crash. Prosecutors later brought charges that include two counts of first-degree manslaughter and three counts of reckless endangerment. Kumar has pleaded not guilty, and the allegations must be resolved in court.

Carter said investigators told her that Billy and Jenny had little opportunity to avoid the obstruction. The couple died at the scene, ending a marriage that had only just begun. Her son had hoped to become a father, while Jenny had dreamed of becoming a piano technician.

As she sought answers, Carter said she learned that Kumar had entered the United States illegally in 2022 and later obtained work authorization and a commercial driver’s license in California. She has questioned how he was able to work as a commercial truck driver and whether the proper safety procedures were followed before and after the crash.

The case has also become entangled with immigration proceedings. Kumar was released on bail while awaiting trial and was later taken into federal immigration custody. Carter has expressed concern that he could be deported before the criminal case is completed, potentially complicating her family’s pursuit of justice.

Carter, who describes herself as a lifelong Democrat, said the experience has changed how she thinks about immigration enforcement. She has called on lawmakers to address commercial driving standards, public safety and the handling of people facing criminal charges who are also subject to immigration proceedings.

Earlier this year, she testified before Congress about her family’s loss. She also criticized lawmakers whom she felt had not taken the issue seriously enough, including Representative Jerry Nadler, whom she said appeared to fall asleep during her testimony.

Her advocacy has placed her personal grief within a broader political debate ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Immigration enforcement and the treatment of undocumented immigrants facing criminal charges have become increasingly prominent issues in congressional discussions.

Carter says her priority remains securing justice for Billy and Jenny. As the criminal proceedings continue, she is seeking answers about the crash and the decisions that preceded it, while trying to ensure that the couple’s deaths are not forgotten.
