Rising actor Clayton Conroy was left fighting for his life after a devastating California highway crash in which another driver allegedly struck his vehicle at more than 100 mph.

Conroy, 32, had been gaining momentum in his acting career after landing a recurring role in Netflix’s crime drama series The Gringo Hunters. He had also been working on several other projects when the April 19 crash abruptly changed the course of his life.

According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Conroy had been driving home after meeting friends at a bar in Los Angeles. As he exited Interstate 10, another vehicle collided with his car.

The impact left Conroy with severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury and fractures involving his hip and shoulder. Doctors initially gave him a low chance of survival, and he underwent emergency brain surgery.

Conroy later described the terrifying aftermath of the crash in an Instagram post, writing that he had been hit by a driver traveling more than 100 mph and that he had undergone brain surgery after doctors believed he might not survive.

He spent about a month at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center before beginning an extensive rehabilitation program. His recovery involved cognitive, physical and occupational therapy, as he worked to relearn basic skills including walking, speaking, reading, eating, drinking and showering.

The actor said he remembers entering the freeway exit lane and looking into his rearview mirror shortly before the collision. He recalled seeing lights approaching quickly before losing consciousness and later waking up in the hospital.

The crash also left him with serious injuries to his arm and leg. At one point, Conroy said he had lost 20 pounds and was still unable to walk independently.

His mother, Britt Crennell, described watching her 32-year-old son relearn abilities he had mastered as a young child as deeply painful. Conroy initially used a rollator to move around, then progressed to a cane and eventually began taking short walks without assistance.

Despite the lengthy recovery ahead, his family has remained hopeful. Crennell said his rehabilitation could take as long as five years, while describing her son as a “walking miracle.”

The accident came at a particularly important moment in Conroy’s career. He played Padre Terry, an American Catholic priest, in The Gringo Hunters, a Netflix series that premiered in July 2025 and became one of the platform’s top 10 non-English-language series. His credits also include Greta, Date. and The Demon Detective.

Authorities have since made an arrest in connection with the crash. The California Highway Patrol arrested 19-year-old Anaheim resident Noor El Deen Amr Soror on Aug. 26, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel. He was reportedly charged with felony reckless driving causing major injury.

As Conroy continues his rehabilitation, he has expressed hope that he will eventually be able to return to acting.

Reflecting on the experience, the actor encouraged people not to take life for granted and emphasized the importance of friends and family during difficult times. For Conroy, a career that appeared to be entering a promising new chapter was suddenly interrupted—but his recovery has given him a chance to begin rebuilding his life.
