Sarah Williams and Katrina Walsh: The 18-Month Plot Behind Sadie Hartley’s Murder

The murder of British businesswoman Sadie Hartley shocked the country in 2016. What initially appeared to be a brutal attack at her home in Lancashire was revealed during a lengthy trial to be the culmination of an alleged plot that had been developing for around 18 months.
Hartley, 60, was found dead at her home in Helmshore, Lancashire, in January 2016. She had suffered multiple stab wounds, and investigators soon began treating the killing as a targeted attack.
The investigation led police to Sarah Williams, a former lover of Hartley’s partner, Ian Johnston, and Williams’ friend Katrina “Kitt” Walsh. Prosecutors said Williams had become obsessed with Johnston and viewed Hartley as an obstacle to rekindling their relationship.
According to evidence presented in court, the two women carefully planned the killing. Walsh’s diary documented their discussions about the murder, while investigators uncovered evidence of preparations that included a trip to Germany to obtain a stun gun.
On the night of January 14, 2016, Hartley answered the door of her home. Prosecutors said Williams used a stun gun to incapacitate her before attacking her with a knife. Hartley suffered more than 50 injuries and died at the scene.
The court also heard that Walsh had helped with preparations and efforts to dispose of evidence. Her diary became a crucial part of the prosecution’s case, revealing how the plan had developed over many months.
Both women denied murder and were tried at Preston Crown Court. On August 17, 2016, a jury found them guilty.
Williams received a life sentence with a minimum term of 30 years before she could be considered for release. Walsh was also sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 25 years.

The sentencing judge described the killing as a carefully planned act driven by obsession rather than a spontaneous crime of passion.
Hartley was a successful businesswoman and a mother whose death left her family and loved ones devastated. The case remains a disturbing example of how a personal fixation, when combined with deliberate planning and assistance from another person, can escalate into a fatal crime.
