The University of Mississippi community is mourning after two students were found dead in separate incidents in Oxford, Mississippi, on September 21, 2026.

According to the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office, the victims were two male students, ages 18 and 20. One was found in university housing on campus, while the other was discovered at an off-campus residence. Authorities have said there is currently no evidence connecting the two deaths.

An emergency call from Stewart Hall at approximately 1:30 p.m. on September 21 was reportedly logged as a possible overdose. The caller reported that the student was not breathing, while staff were providing CPR instructions. However, the nature of the emergency call does not establish that an overdose or drug use caused the student’s death.

During the investigations, the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics unit reportedly found packaged kratom that had been purchased from a retail store. Authorities have emphasized that finding the substance does not mean it caused either death, and investigators have not confirmed that kratom or any other substance played a role.

Autopsies and toxicology testing are being conducted as authorities work to determine the circumstances and causes of the deaths. The Lafayette County coroner, as cited by USA TODAY, said toxicology results could take approximately two to three weeks, meaning definitive answers may not be available immediately.

Officials have also stressed that the two cases appear to be separate. At this stage, investigators have found no evidence linking the deaths, and there has been no indication that the incidents were part of a broader threat to the university community.

The University of Mississippi has also urged students and others to be cautious about information circulating on social media. Officials confirmed that, aside from the two deaths under investigation, no other student deaths had been reported.
