TEENAGE EQUESTRIAN STAR DIES AGED 16 JUST DAYS AFTER HER BIRTHDAY — TRIBUTES POUR IN

The equestrian community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Lily Slattery, a talented young rider who died at just 16 years old, only days after celebrating her birthday.
Lily, from Drum in Knock, County Mayo, Ireland, passed away on October 5, 2026. Her sudden death has left her family, friends, school community and fellow riders devastated.
Although her life was tragically short, Lily had already made a name for herself in the equestrian world. She won the Equestrian Award at the 2025 Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sportstars Awards and competed at the prestigious Dublin Horse Show, where she was the youngest competitor in her young-rider category.
She qualified for the event with Captain Candyman, a horse owned and bred by her grandfather, Gabriel Slattery. Those who knew Lily admired her determination, courage and passion whenever she entered the competition arena.
Showjumping Ireland’s Connaught Region paid tribute to the teenager, remembering her as an exceptional competitor whose determination went far beyond her years. The organisation also highlighted her infectious smile and the happiness she brought to those around her.

Her school communities shared their sorrow, describing Lily as a much-loved student and a wonderful young person who would be remembered with affection.
The impact of her passing has extended throughout the local equestrian community. Several events in the Connaught region were postponed or cancelled as a mark of respect for Lily and her grieving family.
Lily was laid to rest on October 9 following a funeral service at St John the Baptist Church in Knock.
As tributes continue to arrive, friends and fellow riders are remembering a young woman whose talent, warmth and love of horses made a lasting impression.
At just 16, Lily had so much life ahead of her. Now, the community she loved is coming together to honour her memory and support the family she leaves behind.
