Texas Adoptive Parents Charged After 7-Year-Old Troy Koehler Is Found Dead Inside a Washing Machine

HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS — The death of 7-year-old Troy Koehler shocked a Texas community after his body was discovered inside a washing machine in his family’s home in July 2022. Months later, investigators announced charges against his adoptive parents, citing evidence that included disturbing text messages and reports of earlier injuries.

According to Fox News, Jermaine Thomas, 42, was charged with capital murder, while Tiffany Thomas, 35, was charged with injury to a child by omission. The couple had adopted Troy from foster care in 2019.

A Search for a Missing Child

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called to the family’s home on July 28, 2022, after the parents reported Troy missing. They said they had last seen him the previous evening.

Officers searched the property and surrounding area with the assistance of dogs and a drone. During a second search of the residence, a deputy discovered the child’s body inside a top-loading washing machine in a utility area.

Deputies attempted CPR, but Troy could not be revived. Investigators later classified his death as a homicide.

Authorities reported that the child had sustained both recent and older injuries. Investigators also examined evidence suggesting that he had experienced a pattern of abuse before his death.

Disturbing Messages Examined by Investigators

Court documents described text messages exchanged between the adoptive parents that prosecutors said revealed hostility toward Troy.

In one message, Jermaine allegedly threatened to kill the child. In another, Tiffany reportedly expressed frustration and wrote that she was tired of having him in the house.

Investigators also cited a message in which Tiffany allegedly threatened to put Troy in an oven after accusing him of eating food without permission.

The messages became part of the evidence used to support the charges. They also raised questions about whether the child had been in danger for an extended period.

Earlier Reports of Injuries

According to court documents cited in news reports, school officials had previously raised concerns about injuries observed on Troy, including facial bruising and black eyes. Child Protective Services had reportedly been notified on multiple occasions.

Investigators reviewed those reports alongside medical findings, witness statements and surveillance footage as they worked to reconstruct the events leading up to the child’s death.

Authorities alleged that the evidence contradicted parts of the parents’ accounts of when they last saw Troy and what happened overnight.

Criminal Charges Follow Investigation

Jermaine Thomas faced a capital murder charge involving a child under 10, while Tiffany Thomas was charged with injury to a child by omission. At the time of the November 2022 report, court records listed bonds of $2 million for Jermaine and $150,000 for Tiffany.

The charges reflected allegations made by investigators and prosecutors; they were not, by themselves, proof of guilt. The case drew attention to the importance of responding to repeated warning signs when a child may be experiencing abuse.

Troy’s death left a community searching for answers about how the circumstances surrounding his care had escalated to such a tragic outcome.
