Michigan Teen Used a Slingshot to Save His 8-Year-Old Sister From an Alleged Kidnapping

A 13-year-old boy in Michigan sprang into action after witnessing a frightening incident involving his younger sister in their own backyard.

On May 10, 2023, Owen Burns was at home when he saw a stranger approach his 8-year-old sister, who was outside looking for mushrooms in Alpena Township. According to Michigan State Police, the man allegedly grabbed the girl and attempted to pull her toward nearby woods.

The girl managed to break free, while Owen quickly grabbed his slingshot and fired at the suspect from a window. Owen later told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that he used a marble and a rock, striking the man in the head and chest.

The suspect reportedly fled but was later found by state troopers. Police said injuries consistent with being struck by the slingshot helped investigators identify him. The suspect was 17 at the time and was charged as an adult with attempted kidnapping and other offenses, according to reports.

Owen’s quick response drew praise from law enforcement and his family. His parents said they were deeply proud and grateful that their daughter had made it home safely.

The incident became a widely shared story about a young brother’s split-second reaction when his sister faced danger.
